Meet Jose Lado-Abeal
Biography

I have been involved in medical education within University settings since the beginning of my medical career. In 1982, at the beginning of my 4th year of medical school at the University of Santiago de Compostela, I joined the Ibero-American Institute of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Nutrition under the direction of professor Jose Cabezas-Cerrato. During three years I received training in the fields of neuroendocrinology and diabetes neuropathy on humans subjects. After finishing the medical school, I had a training period of fourth years in neuroendocrinology to obtain my Ph.D. degree. During this period I have the opportunity to work with professor FF Casanueva en Santiago de Compostela, Spain and Dr. Luciano Martini in Milan, Italy. After finishing my clinical training in Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and London, England, I spend two years as post-doctoral research associated at the Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas. Under the direction of professor Reid L Norman, I received training in basic as well as translational research in the rhesus monkey. In 2000 I joined the endocrinology fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospitals where I have the opportunity to work under the supervision of professors Samuel Refetoff, Roy E Weiss and Lesley DeGroot, all world leaders in the thyroid field. In the laboratory of professor Refetoff, I continued my research training in human genetics. In 2003 I was appointed as Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela where I started the Thyroid and Metabolic Unit that is dedicated at the study of thyroid diseases and lipodystrophies. During my tenure at the University of Santiago de Compostela, I directed RIAIDT, a multi-campus network of research facilities, and I was appointed Clinical Vicedean with the responsibility to coordinate the clerkship rotation of 900 medical students within the SERGAS –the Autonomous Community of Galicia healthcare systems. After ten years as a full professor and chief of the endocrinology division at the Department of Internal Medicine of TTUHSC-SOM, in September 2018 I joined Truman Medical Center-UMKC in to continue my clinical and academic trajectory.
