Program Director

Paul Ganss, M.S., NRP, NCEE

Paul Ganss, MS, NRP, NCEEPaul Ganss came to Kansas City from Toledo, Ohio in 2008 to work in education in the former MAST system. In 2010 he started at the School of Medicine where he manages the Clinical Training and Simulation Center as well as the EMS Education program. He is a graduate of the Paramedic Class of 1980 at the Medical College of Ohio, and has experience in public, private, and hospital-based EMS systems providing 9-1-1, inter-facility, and critical care transport. He is a nationally certified EMS educator.

Erica Carney, M.D.

Erica Carney, MDDr. Carney is a graduate of The UMKC School of Medicine’s BA/MD program and completed her Emergency Medicine residency in the UMKC/Truman Medical Center Emergency Medicine program. She completed her EMS fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and is a board-certified EMS Physician. Dr. Carney currently practices as a staff physician and member of the faculty in the Emergency Department at Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill. She is also the Associate EMS Medical Director for the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

Paramedic Lead Instructor

Erik Carlson, NRP

Erik Carlsen, NRPErik Carlsen is a Lead Instructor for the Paramedic program at the Hospital Hill campus, teaching Cardiology. Mr. Carlsen has experience as a paramedic in the Kansas City region, having worked as a paramedic, EMS educator, and Paramedic Lead Instructor for the former MAST system. He currently is a Division Chief in the Professional Development Bureau of the Kansas City (MO) Fire Department, and has been with the UMKC Paramedic program since the first Paramedic class in 2012.

William Gullick II, B.S., NRP

William Gulick II, B.S., NRPOriginally, from Pennsylvania, Bill Gulick came to Kansas City to work as a Paramedic in the MAST system. Bill has been a field paramedic, supervisor, educator, and EMS manager in a variety of focus areas. He is currently a Division Chief for the Kansas City (MO) Fire Department addressing health, safety, and risk management issues. Bill started as the Lead Instructor for the EMT programs in 2013, and currently is the Lead Instructor for the Paramedic program.

EMT Lead Instructor/Clinical Coordinator

Virginia Wilson, B.A. NRP

Virginia Wilson joined the EMS Education program in 2017 as the Lead Instructor for the Summer EMT Academy. Virginia has experience as a firefighter, paramedic, and EMS educator as well as experience as an inspector for the Missouri Bureau of EMS.
