Hospital Hill Diversity Council


Vision, Mission, Goals, & Strategies

Vision:

The Hospital Hill Diversity Council is comprised of representatives from Children’s Mercy Hospital & Clinics, St. Luke’s Health System, Truman Medical Centers, UMKC Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, and Institute for Human Development. The council aspires to have an academic health center community that celebrates diversity and values, and respects differences; engages actively in issues of diversity; and develops competence needed to work with diverse populations.

Mission statement:

The Hospital Hill Diversity Council fosters and models an academic health center community grounded in respect for and appreciation of individual differences.

Goals:

In an effort to decrease disparities in health care, the council will:

  • Provide guidance and support related to meeting the diversity goals of each diversity council member’s organization.
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships with diversity-related programs, groups and populations on the Hospital Hill Campus.
  • Recommend initiatives to recruit and retain a diverse student, faculty and staff population.
  • Assist the participant organizations in learning about issues relevant to under-represented populations, and encouraging networking and mentoring among these schools.
  • Provide guidance for student and staff opportunities that enhance learning related to issues in health disparities, cultural differences and cultural competencies.
  • Serve as an active agent of social and political change with all of the Hospital Hill partners listed above
Strategies/Activities:
  • Continue raising our own and other’s consciousness through formal and informal training and development.
  • Monitor and assess interpersonal and institutional practices that invite and/or suppress inclusiveness.
  • Focus activities to support historically underrepresented groups.
  • Share best practices to help impact disparities.
  • Develop opportunities of individuals from diverse backgrounds to interact.
  • Identify strategies for providing opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to be included in key and visible roles on campus.
  • Secure resources that can be provided as support for integrated, interdisciplinary diversity initiatives (programming, cultural events, student recruitment, etc.)
