Performance Period: 7/2015-6/2017
Project Goals: to characterize binding interactions between BCL9 and STAT3 by x-ray crystallography and then use fragment screening to identify chemical compounds to interfere with this binding. The long-term goal is to find therapeutic strategies for prevention of breast cancer non-invasive to invasive progression.
Total direct cost: $35,000

Molecular Characterization of DCIS with Invasive Potential.
Role: Pilot Project PI (Behbod)
Ruby Meierotto, MD Role: Co-investigator
Supporting Agency: University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Pathology.
Performance Period: 7/2016-6/2017
Project Goals: Identify genomic aberrations in patients DCIS that are associated with invasive progression. Test whether patient DCIS contain multiple clonal subpopulations, some of which contain unique mutations that drive DCIS invasive progression.
Total direct cost: $10,000

Genetic Evolution of Breast Cancer in BRCA1/2 Mutation Carriers.
Ruby Meierotto, MD Role: Co-investigator
Supporting Agency: KUMC Clinical Translational Pilot Project
Performance Period: 7/2016-6/2017
Project Goals: Test whether BRCA1 and BRCA2 related early unique genomic aberrations predispose to the development of breast cancer in mice.  Test whether differences exist between breast epithelial cells derived from BRCA1 vs. BRCA2 with respect to their unique genomic aberrations.  Are there different pathways that lead to tumor development in BRCA1 vs. BRCA2 mutation carriers?
Total direct cost: $20,000

Progression of DCIS to invasive breast cancer through CCR2 chemokine signaling.

Designing software for motion compensated digital tomosynthesis (DTS).
Sherwin Chan, MD Role: PI
Supporting Agency: Children’s Mercy New Investigator Award
Performance Period: 7/2015-6/2018
Project Goals: To evaluate a motion compensation system to improve DTS images with motion blurring for diagnostic quality in subject volunteers.  We have created an external marker system, metallic rods, for patients and a motion monitoring algorithm that will use the external markers and internal cues in the images to correct for patient motion during the DTS acquisition.
Total direct cost: $60,000

Pediatric Airway VolumeRAD protocol optimization.
Sherwin Chan, MD Role: PI
Nima Kasraie, PhD Role: Co-Investigator
Supporting Agency: GE Investigator Initiated Protocol
Performance Period: 7/2014-6/2017
Project Goals: We propose to optimize the VolumeRAD protocol for pediatric airway imaging. The generic GE VolumeRAD thoracic protocol scans the whole chest and takes more than 10 seconds. For pediatric airway imaging, we want to decrease the sweep time by acquiring enough data to accurately and efficiently reconstruct to the pediatric airways. We aim to find the optimal protocol by testing various protocols using a pediatric phantom.
