More than 20 new medical students joined the American Medical Association through a September recruiting event by the UMKC School of Medicine’s medical student section. The effort earned the School of Medicine’s student group an Event of the Month Award recognition from the AMA.
The two-day recruiting effort saw chapter advisor Charles Van Way, M.D., professor of surgery and Sosland/Missouri Endowed Chair in Shock Trauma Research, share his experiences with the AMA as well as tips on how to survive medical school. A member of the Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA) also joined the group to discuss the state section of the AMA. Members of the local section’s board also met with Year 1 students for an open question and answer session to discuss topics from medical school and handling class work to the benefits of involvement in the AMA
“What is great about our board is that we span from Year 2 through Year 5,” said Josephine Doo, MS 2, who serves as the UMKC group’s recruitment chair.
Board members Caroline Doo, MS 4 (Chapter Delegate), Sara Monfared, MS 5, (Chapter President), Monica Shukla, MS 5, (Chapter Vice President), Rasa Hasan, MS 5, (Chapter Treasurer), Joey Guidos, MS 5, (Chapter Secretary), David Poindexter, MS 4, (Chapter Alternate Delegate), and Sneha Chintamaneni, MS 3, (Chapter Community Service Chair)
An AMA Student Involvement Grant and donations from the MSMA helped to fund the recruiting effort that included food and gift bags for prospective members.
All of the AMA’s monthly awards will be showcased at the organization’s annual meeting next June in Chicago. AMA student members will then select one “Event of the Year” winner.
