Rima Abhyankar, M.D.

Undergraduate: Yale University
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine

Dr. Rima AbhyankarThough I was born in Boston, I consider Kansas City to be home (and went to school just down the street from SLH)! Prior to starting residency, I attended Yale for my undergraduate degree, where I studied Global Affairs. I then completed a Fulbright fellowship in Chennai, India and worked as a Research Assistant at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. After time away, I was happy to return home for medical school. I fell in love with anesthesiology almost instantly during my clinical rotations and feel lucky to stay close to home as I complete my training in this field. UMKC immediately stood out as a place where residents are always supported, and I knew the tight-knit community would be one where I could thrive. My clinical interests include regional and obstetric anesthesiology, health policy, and global health. When I’m not at the hospital, you can find me running, water coloring, tasting ALL the ice cream in KC (for science, of course), or trying a new spicy recipe at home.
Justin Ewald, M.D.

Undergraduate: Kansas State University
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine

Dr. Justin EwaldI’m a Kansas City native, and I grew up on the Kansas side in Overland Park. Growing up, I always took KC for granted, but as I have gone through life I’ve come to enjoy every corner of the city, especially the Crossroads District and the ever expanding art and food scene KC has to offer. I attended Kansas State University for my undergraduate degree before heading back to KC to attend the University of Kansas for medical school. I’m proud to be a JayDoc, but will still always cheer for the Wildcats! I am very excited to start the next step of my career so close to home. For me, UMKC offered the perfect balance of training and anesthesia case diversity, from the trauma at Truman Medical Center to the advanced cardiac care of St. Luke’s, all bundled with a tight knit resident community. My research and clinical interests include regional anesthesiology, the intersection of technology and medicine, and the advancement of medical education. My personal interests include hiking, camping, snowboarding, taking the doors off my Jeep, and looking for the best breakfast burrito KC has to offer.
Igor Gostyuzhev, M.D.

Undergraduate: York University
Medical School: Saba University

Dr. Igor GostyuzhevI grew up in Toronto, Canada and received my nursing degree from York University. I worked full time for three years as a registered nurse in critical care and quickly developed a passion for anesthesiology. As a medical student, I rotated at UMKC for some of my cores and electives. I was amazed by the quality in teaching from the attendings, the ample amount of learning opportunities and complexity of patients. As a result, University of Missouri – Kansas City was my top choice for residency, and I am extremely happy to have matched here. Kansas City is an amazing place for its barbeque, outdoor activities, and low cost of living. In my spare time I enjoy running, working out and trying out local food.
Andrew Thomas Graziano, M.D. MS, RN

Undergraduate: Saint Elizabeth College of Nursing, Grove City College
Graduate: Drexel University
Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine

Dr. Andrew GrazianoWhy UMKC & Anesthesiology: I was very fortunate to be sent to St. Luke’s for my 3rd year clerkships. Learning from the exceptional faculty, residents, and nursing staff made me certain that UMKC was the institute for me. Anesthesiology had always been “on the radar” ever since I left my career as a critical care RN to expand my practice and knowledge. While I was on OB/GYN and Surgery, I worked with many of the anesthesia faculty and residents, as well as the CRNAs & AAs. The personalize care and compassion they showed all of their patients, the team approach that was practiced in the ORs. I was 100% sold that this was the speciality for me and there was no other program that I would want to train at. I am so comprehensively overjoyed to be here for the next four years.
Clinical Interests: As a PCU/ICU/ER nurse of 12 years, Critical Care medicine is definitely a passion of mine. Also interested in medical education and pain management for Sickle Cell patients.
Hobbies Outside of Medicine: Baking. I have watched the Great British Baking Show countless times and have attempted many of the technical bakes. I enjoy the fitness things. Accompanying my friends to Bar-K and petting as many dogs as possible. Also an amateur tequila connoisseur.
Alec Stein, D.O., M.A.

Undergraduate: University of Iowa
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences

Born and raised in Iowa, I attended the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!) and earned degrees in Spanish and Human Physiology. I did medical school at Kansas City University, where I concurrently earned a Master’s Degree in Bioethics. My wife and I were in a long-distance relationship during most of my medical school years as she completed her pediatrics residency and Chief Year at the University of Iowa.

Nothing in medicine excites me more than anesthesiology, knowing that training as an anesthesiologist ensures you can manage the most critical of situations. My matching at UMKC for anesthesia has allowed my wife and me to finally be in the same place as we both happily move forward with our careers. Ever since I began school here, we have come to love what KC offers. The food, breweries, sports teams, music, and proximity to family are just a few of the things that make it such an easy and enjoyable place to live.

After talking about it for years, we’ve finally expanded our little family! When we’re not working, we are most excited about spending time with our rescue puppy, Moira Rose. We lovingly call her “Mo.” We also love to be in the kitchen, especially if it allows us to cook with cast iron. If you have any new recipes for us to try, send them our way!
