Justin Ewald, M.D.

Undergraduate: Kansas State University
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine

Dr. Justin EwaldI’m a Kansas City native, and I grew up on the Kansas side in Overland Park. Growing up, I always took KC for granted, but as I have gone through life I’ve come to enjoy every corner of the city, especially the Crossroads District and the ever expanding art and food scene KC has to offer. I attended Kansas State University for my undergraduate degree before heading back to KC to attend the University of Kansas for medical school. I’m proud to be a JayDoc, but will still always cheer for the Wildcats! I am very excited to start the next step of my career so close to home. For me, UMKC offered the perfect balance of training and anesthesia case diversity, from the trauma at Truman Medical Center to the advanced cardiac care of St. Luke’s, all bundled with a tight knit resident community. My research and clinical interests include regional anesthesiology, the intersection of technology and medicine, and the advancement of medical education. My personal interests include hiking, camping, snowboarding, taking the doors off my Jeep, and looking for the best breakfast burrito KC has to offer.
Igor Gostyuzhev, M.D.

Undergraduate: York University
Medical School: Saba University

Dr. Igor GostyuzhevI grew up in Toronto, Canada and received my nursing degree from York University. I worked full time for three years as a registered nurse in critical care and quickly developed a passion for anesthesiology. As a medical student, I rotated at UMKC for some of my cores and electives. I was amazed by the quality in teaching from the attendings, the ample amount of learning opportunities and complexity of patients. As a result, University of Missouri – Kansas City was my top choice for residency, and I am extremely happy to have matched here. Kansas City is an amazing place for its barbeque, outdoor activities, and low cost of living. In my spare time I enjoy running, working out and trying out local food.
Andrew Thomas Graziano, M.D. MS, RN

Undergraduate: Saint Elizabeth College of Nursing, Grove City College
Graduate: Drexel University
Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine

Dr. Andrew GrazianoWhy UMKC & Anesthesiology: I was very fortunate to be sent to St. Luke’s for my 3rd year clerkships. Learning from the exceptional faculty, residents, and nursing staff made me certain that UMKC was the institute for me. Anesthesiology had always been “on the radar” ever since I left my career as a critical care RN to expand my practice and knowledge. While I was on OB/GYN and Surgery, I worked with many of the anesthesia faculty and residents, as well as the CRNAs & AAs. The personalize care and compassion they showed all of their patients, the team approach that was practiced in the ORs. I was 100% sold that this was the speciality for me and there was no other program that I would want to train at. I am so comprehensively overjoyed to be here for the next four years.
Clinical Interests: As a PCU/ICU/ER nurse of 12 years, Critical Care medicine is definitely a passion of mine. Also interested in medical education and pain management for Sickle Cell patients.
Hobbies Outside of Medicine: Baking. I have watched the Great British Baking Show countless times and have attempted many of the technical bakes. I enjoy the fitness things. Accompanying my friends to Bar-K and petting as many dogs as possible. Also an amateur tequila connoisseur.
Lakshmi Sarvepalli, M.D.

Medical School: M.N.R Medical College

Dr. Manu SarvepalliI am originally from India but I moved to Kansas City in 2016 as a Med student after I got married. My husband received his Masters degree from KU Wichita in 2009 and has been working in Kansas City since then. I chose anesthesia because since I was a kid I have always wanted to become the doctor who can save someone’s life in any circumstances and I believe anesthesia is the best fit for me in that aspect. (COVID proved it very well ) I chose UMKC because I wanted to do cardiac critical care and MAHI- SLH is one of the best hospitals in the nation with lots of complex sick patients – which provides us with a very strong hands on experience to deal with any crisis in the future( specially cardiac cases). Another most important strength of this program is the good work life balance and every team in this program works together like a close family. Coming to the place itself I have a lot to speak about Kansas city, we have been living in Overland Park for 4 years now and it has the perfect balance of everything we would want in our lives. Every age group has something to explore here along with best schools and daycares and the traffic in this city is the icing on the cake. Outside of medicine, my family is my everything, I have a 2 and half year old and I spend all my time with them along with cooking, Zumba, yoga and spiritual reading.
Alec Stein, D.O., M.A.

Undergraduate: University of Iowa

Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences

Born and raised in Iowa, I attended the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!) and earned degrees in Spanish and Human Physiology. I did medical school at Kansas City University, where I concurrently earned a Master’s Degree in Bioethics. My wife and I were in a long-distance relationship during most of my medical school years as she completed her pediatrics residency and Chief Year at the University of Iowa.

Nothing in medicine excites me more than anesthesiology, knowing that training as an anesthesiologist ensures you can manage the most critical of situations. My matching at UMKC for anesthesia has allowed my wife and me to finally be in the same place as we both happily move forward with our careers. Ever since I began school here, we have come to love what KC offers. The food, breweries, sports teams, music, and proximity to family are just a few of the things that make it such an easy and enjoyable place to live.

After talking about it for years, we’ve finally expanded our little family! When we’re not working, we are most excited about spending time with our rescue puppy, Moira Rose. We lovingly call her “Mo.” We also love to be in the kitchen, especially if it allows us to cook with cast iron. If you have any new recipes for us to try, send them our way!

Mathieu Assercq, M.D.

Undergraduate: Centre College, Danville KY
Medical School: Louisiana State University School of Medicine Shreveport

Assercq, MathiewI was born in Louisiana, received a B.S. in Chemistry at Centre College in Kentucky, and finished my medical education at LSU-Shreveport. My wife, Emma, and I were thrilled with the prospects of living here to finish my medical education and so that she could complete her law studies. Moving here was intimidating at first since we were both completing our professional studies and moving away from family for the first time since having our two children, Graham and Ava. That being said, I can’t explain how welcoming everyone has been at UMKC. Everyone has been incredibly friendly and the city is very family friendly. Every weekend there’s a different festival or event to attend. More importantly, I have been very impressed by the entire faculty and residents and I am looking forward to our years in KC as we learn to call it home.
Justin Derges, D.O.

Undergraduate: University of Missouri – Columbia, Columbia Missouri
Graduate School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences

Derges, JustinI am a native Southwest Missourian, born and raised in the Ozarks. I attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for undergrad, majoring in Biology and Spanish. It was during this time that I met my lovely wife Rachel. We moved to Kansas City so that I could obtain a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences, after which I began the trek of medical school. I’ve had a passion for medicine from an early age, and am thrilled to be receiving my training in anesthesia at UMKC. My wife and I have now been married over 8 years and we are raising three children. We have lived in KC since 2013, and we love it here. From all the parks and outdoor activities, to places like Crown Center and the River Market, there is always something to do. Aside from family time and medicine, I also have a passion for golf, exercise, swimming, and church service.
Brandon Grosshart, D.O.

Undergraduate: University of California Santa Barbara, Goleta California
Medical School: Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Grosshart, BrandonI was born and raised in San Diego, CA where I enjoyed surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and many other outdoor activities that are made possible by southern California’s beautiful weather. I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Biochemistry and worked for a few years in cancer research at UC San Diego before making the move to Iowa to attend Des Moines University for medical school. UMKC anesthesia was my top choice for residency as I was so impressed by the quality of training provided and supportiveness of the faculty in both our education and overall wellbeing. Living in Kansas City has been great as well with plenty of outdoor activities, restaurants, breweries, and sporting events to enjoy.
Yasser Hassan, M.D.

Undergraduate: University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine

Hassan, YasserI was born and raised in Wichita, KS and went to undergrad at The University of Kansas. After undergrad, I worked as an ER scribe in Kansas City for 2 years and then went to medical school at The University of Kansas so I have already been living in Kansas City for a number of years. I was glad to have matched at UMKC and been able to stay in Kansas City. The city is truly a hidden gem in the midwest. It is the perfect sized city where you get some of the perks of a big city but without the headaches of nonstop traffic and high cost of living. There has been lots of growth and development in the city in the last few years and you can always find something to do.
Lee Miesner, D.O.

Undergraduate: Southwest Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Medical School: A.T. Still University of Health Sciences –Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville Missouri

Miesner, LeeI was born and raised on a small dairy farm in Perry County Missouri. I attended Southeast Missouri State University where I graduated with a degree in Mathematics Education. I taught high school math for two years before starting medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Unexpectedly, I really liked my required third year anesthesia rotation and decided this specialty was the best fit for me. Kansas City is a great place to complete residency. There are plenty of things to do and living expenses are low. I have been married for ten years and have two children.
Timothy Stoppelman, M.D.

Undergraduate: Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri
Graduate School: Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City Kansas

Stoppelman, TimothyI was born and raised in Kansas City as one of eight children. I was always interested in science and was planning to go to medical school as I attended Rockhurst University in what seems like a lifetime ago. But interests changed and I ended up in a graduate degree in Ecology at Pitt State. After several other twists and turns, life brought me back to medicine when I attended KU in Kansas City, KS for medical school. I was very happy learning I had matched at UMKC so I could stay close to my family, and my co-residents and faculty have been very friendly and supportive. Finally becoming a doctor has been amazing, but my most important role in life is as the husband of a strong and supportive wife and father of four beautiful children. Life can certainly be hectic in our household, but there is never a dull moment. Free time is scarce, but I can usually steal a few moments to play with the kids or work on one of several “projects” I always have going on around the house. Life has to slow down at some point, but until then, I’m hanging on and enjoying the ride!

Ben Brakke, D.O.

Undergraduate: University of Minnesota Duluth
Medical School: A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona

I am a native of Rochester, MN. Growing up in the home of the Mayo Clinic put healthcare on my radar from an early age. I enrolled in biology/pre-medicine at the University of Minnesota Duluth. While in college, I worked as a firefighter/EMT and ER tech. My biggest accomplishment was meeting the incredible girl who is now my wife of 6 years, Kaitie. Duluth, MN was beautiful, but had some very long and cold winters. As a 180-degree change, I went to medical school at A.T. Still University in Arizona. Although I’ll miss the 70 degree winter days in Phoenix, I couldn’t be happier that I matched Anesthesia at UMKC. I chose this program because I felt like it has great current residents, the exposure to a wide variety of cases is excellent, and the class size of 6 residents per year hits the optimal balance. In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor adventures with my wife and 2 dogs, playing musical instruments, attempting my own car repairs, and creatively using Gorgonzola in my cooking.
Gabrielle Brown, M.D.

Undergraduate: Abilene Christian University
Medical School: TTUHSC SOM

As the daughter of two practicing anesthesiologists, anesthesia has been on my radar since preschool graduation when I had the most syllables on what I want to be when I grow up. In the intervening years, I’ve expanded my horizons outside of medicine, but nothing else fills my days like a good day in the OR. Outside the hospital, you can find me “getting dirty” in the ceramic studio or making music at my keyboard, and occasionally you can find me trying to bring light to kids‘ lives with the 501st
Chris Kelsheimer, M.D.

Undergraduate: Rockhurst University
Medical School: Saint Louis University School of Medicine

I was born and raised in the suburbs of St. Louis, MO. I attended Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO for undergrad and graduated with a BS in Biochemistry. I enjoyed all 4 years in Kansas City, especially because it is where I met my wife, but also because there is no shortage of entertainment. There are plenty of things to do around town for singles, couples, and families. After Rockhurst, I attended SLU School of Medicine. It was great being back home (especially because my wife is also from St. Louis), but I didn’t hesitate to come back to KC when the opportunity presented itself. My hobbies include movies, golf, tennis, exercise in general, cheering on the St. Louis Blues, and the occasional weekend filled with binge-watching a show on Netflix.
Emil Markulis, D.O.

Undergraduate: University at Buffalo
Graduate School: University at Buffalo
Medical School: Touro University Nevada

I grew up in a small college town, Geneseo, in Western NY. I moved to Buffalo, NY to pursue studies in Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, quickly discovering a passion for anatomy and physiology. After graduating I switched coasts and headed to San Diego, California to be a care provider for my grandparents. After a few years of working, I decided to go back to school to Touro Nevada, an osteopathic medical school in Las Vegas, NV. My interview at UMKC was on one of the coldest days of the year but I couldn’t have felt a warmer welcome. I count myself very lucky to be in residency in Kansas City, everyone at the program is extremely positive and supportive. Kansas City has been great with all the parks, music, and craft beer. Free time usually involves sampling the local food and brews, mountain biking and brazilian jiujitsu.
Nikita Ovtchinnikov, M.D.

Undergraduate: McGill university
Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine

I was born in Moscow, Russia and immigrated with my family to Canada when I was 11. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of living in many diverse cities including Montreal, Buffalo and Toronto. I went to university in Montreal at McGill University and attained a mechanical engineering degree before falling in love with medicine and attending Saba University School of Medicine. In my free time, I love checking out the local craft beer scene, being outside, boxing, and leisure reading. I’m new to Kansas City but I love everything I’ve seen so far and very excited to explore further and make this my new home.
Braden Webb, D.O.

Undergraduate: Utah State University
Medical School: A.T. Still University – KCOM

Born and raised in northern Utah, I grew up wakeboarding, snowboarding, playing sports and video games. I went to Utah State University for undergrad with my wife, Emily, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a minor in chemistry while she earned a master’s degree in accounting. During my third year of medical school, I had a required rotation in anesthesiology. In just two weeks, I realized that anesthesia is so much more than putting people to sleep. When I interviewed at UMKC, I loved the small program feel with the high volume of complicated cases that will prepare me for private practice. Kansas City also offers a lot to my wife and two kids with parks, museums, libraries, and so much more for families…this is the perfect place to be!
