Why did you choose to attend the UMKC Master of Health Professions Education program?

I felt there was a gap in the knowledge and skills I had necessary to thrive in the academic environment—specifically surrounding curriculum development, learner assessment, and designing and executing quality educational research. I enrolled in a 3-credit hour course on instructional design that was covered at cost by the UMKC faculty development committee and had such a great experience that I decided to pursue a master’s degree

What have you enjoyed most about your experience at UMKC?

The 1:1 attention and small class sizes: the curriculum is highly applicable to the clinician-educator and novice educational researcher.

What have you found most valuable in your program?

The faculty and benefitting from their expertise! I have also appreciated that the coursework is often project-based, which means each semester I have something tangible that can be implemented at the Undergraduate or Graduate Medical Education level.

Metro Rate is contingent on meeting Residency rules established by the Office of Admissions.

**The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) is an interstate initiative established by the Midwestern Higher Education Compact to increase educational opportunities for students in its member states. Financial Aid

The UMKC Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships can assist with providing additional information regarding financial aid programs, including federal and state grant and loan programs. In addition, the UMKC Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships can offer you more information on the types of expenses you can expect, as well as the type of assistance that might be available to you.

In general, students interested in merit or need-based financial aid may be eligible for various loans, grants and/or other financial aid programs. To be considered for such programs, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available through the UMKC Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

The priority date for filing the FAFSA is February 1.

Admission Requirements

The requirements for admission are governed by the UMKC School of Medicine.  An admissions committee is composed of faculty and administrators who review complete applications and make all final admission decisions.

Applicants can begin in either the fall or spring semester.

Applicants for admission to the Master of Health Professions Education must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Earn a professional degree in the health professions or in a related field (e.g., MD, DDS, DO, RN, Pharm.D, PhD, MA, MS, MPA, MBA).
  • Earn a baccalaureate degree (e.g. BA, BS) with a minimum of two years of professional experience in the health professions.
TOEFL and IELTS Scores
  • The TOEFL exam or IELTS exam is required for international applicants whose native language is not English.
  • TOEFL Scores: A minimum score of 550 (paper-based exam), 213 (computer-based exam) or 79 (Internet-based exam) is required.
    • UMKC TOEFL electronic code: 6872.
  • IELTS minimum score required: A minimum score of 6.0 is required for graduate level study at UMKC.

  • Exception: Applicants who are currently participating in a health professions residency or fellowship are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.

Applying for Admission

Applicants for admission to the Master of Health Professions Education program must submit all applications and application materials. Applications must be complete before the admissions committee will consider the application for admission. Applications that remain incomplete will not be considered.

Students applying to the Master of Health Professions Education program must submit the following:

    • UMKC General Application for Admission
    • International students should also review the information provided by the International Student Affairs Office.
    • Official college/university transcripts,
    • Official TOEFL or IELTS score (if applicable),
    • A one-page goal statement,
    • A résumé or CV,
    • One letter of recommendation (if applicable).
      • Physicians in residency or fellowship programs are required to submit a letter of recommendation from the director of their program.

All applicants must complete the UMKC General Application for Admission.  Please follow the instructions provided on the application.

International students should complete the UMKC General Application for Admission and review the information provided by the International Student Affairs Office.

Step 2Submit Transcripts & Test Scores

All applicants are required to submit official college/university transcripts and official TOEFL  or IELTS scores (if applicable) to the university. Transcripts may be sent to:

Step 3Submit a Goal Statement & CV

All applicants are required to submit a one-page goal statement and CV.  These documents should be uploaded directly to your UMKC General Application for Admission.

Step 4Letters of Recommendation

Physicians in residency or fellowship programs are required to submit a letter of recommendation from the director of their program.  Recommendation letter requests should be sent directly through the UMKC General Application for Admission.

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education may apply for the Master’s degree by completing the UMKC General Application for Admission and submitting supplemental materials, including: a revised goal statement, CV, and letters of recommendation (if applicable). The supplemental materials should be submitted to the appropriate individuals, as indicated above. Students who have completed similar credited certificate programs in health professions education may petition the faculty committee for consideration of transfer coursework by notifying the director.

Application Process for Visiting or Community Students (Non-certificate/Non-degree seeking students)

Students interested in taking courses for credit, who may not wish to pursue the Master of Health Professions Education program, may enroll as visiting or community students.

Eligibility

    • Visiting or community students must have a professional degree or baccalaureate degree and professional experience in the health professions or consent of the instructor.
    • Visiting or community students may enroll in the Master of Health Professions Education at a later date and receive full credit for completed coursework.

Applying for Admission

Visiting or community students applying to take courses in the Master of Health Professions Education program must submit the following:

Visiting/Community Student applications are submitted to the UMKC Office of Admissions.  After the application has been processed and you have received your acceptance letter and student number, you may enroll in coursework.

If a student chooses to pursue the Master of Health Professions Education at a later date, he/she will be required to complete the full application process for admission.

FAQs

What does it mean that the Master of Health Professions Education is based on an “educational research” foundation?

Educational research, as the systematic and rigorous investigation of instructional topics,  is key to understanding educational practice (learning, teaching, assessment, curriculum, evaluation in the health professions).  The Master of Health Professions Education develops a strong educational research-based perspective for students as they tackle learning and instructional problems.

Are there benefits to the interprofessional approach in the Master of Health Professions Education?

Yes. Working together with health educators from diverse fields (Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health, Pharmacy and Dentistry) serves to expand students’ understanding of learning, and provides the opportunity to see how instructional theory plays out in a full range of health professions education situations.

Is graduate education in health professions education something new?

Graduate Education in the Health Professions has snowballed over the last 10 years. Several factors account for this. First, innovation in the health sciences demands new ways of teaching and assessment. Second, educational science has evolved and provides cutting edge solutions for practice in health professions education. Third, accreditation guidelines demand a high level of educational competence. Fourth, the economic climate calls for effective and efficient and economically feasible instruction.[

What are the qualifications of the faculty in the Master of Health Professions Education?

All faculty have significant experience in health professions education and advanced degrees in a health sciences field or in education. All faculty publish research regularly and attend conferences in the field.

When do the classes meet?

Classes are online asynchronous instruction, or blended. For classes requiring in-class meetings, meetings are generally arranged based on student availability.

How long will it take to complete the program?

You may complete the certificate program in one year. Completing the masters degree requires a minimum of two years of study.

Is additional work outside of attending class required?

Yes. The Master of Health Professions Education is a rigorous academic program and it is project-based.  Students complete readings and projects in each course and participate in discussions.

Is attendance at the course meetings required?

Attendance is generally required and documented.

Are faculty available at times other than class times to provide assistance?

Yes. All faculty are available both online and in person.

Current Issues in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5530) – Consideration of the major social, historical, educational, professional and cultural issues that affect health professions education today as linked to learning and teaching in the health professions.  Blended*

Principles and Methods of Research (HPRE 5508) – Understanding and applying educational research methods to issues in health professions education. Focus on quantitative, qualitative and mixed method models, and on contributing to the research body in health professions education. Online

Teaching in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5560) – Emphasis on learning and teaching theories as applied to instructional methods, delivery, students and learning contexts. Focus on individual differences, mentoring and tutoring, and on teaching in clinical, small group and large group situations in health sciences education.  Blended*

Assessment in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5550) – Focus on the design, implementation and evaluation of tools for assessing student learning and performance in health professions education and on the development of assessment systems. Consideration of validity, reliability, writing test items, survey design, checklists, observational assessment, simulations and rubrics. Emphasis on best practices, assessment issues, and on the effective implementation of comprehensive assessment programs in health professions education. Blended*

Curriculum Design in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5522) – Examination of the theory and strategies for the development, implementation, and evaluation of curricula in health professions education. Focus on contextual factors, learner needs, current models, outcome-based approaches, leadership, and faculty development for design and delivery. Online

Program Evaluation in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5580) – Applied research as linked to program development and evaluation in health professions education.  Topics include needs assessment, summative and formative evaluations, methodologies, data collection, data analysis, and reporting findings. Project-based: Students will develop full program evaluation as a requirement for this course. Prerequisite: EDRP 5508 or consent of instructor. Online

Leadership and Administration in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5500) – Current approaches to academic leadership in health professions education. Topics include management skills, problem solving, communication, group skills, motivation, managing conflict, delegating, legal and budgeting issues. Focus on individual, group and organizational performance. Blended*

Applied Biostatistics (MEDB 5501) — Introduction to statistical concepts and analytic methods as applied to health science. Course includes lectures and hands on computer laboratory.  Online or In-class. Students may substitute a similar course in basic or intermediate statistics with the approval of the advisor.

Teaching about Culture and Health (HPRE 5566) – Emphasis on curriculum development and teaching about social determinants of health, culturally appropriate care, and health disparities.  Focus on skills in active learning, facilitation, and debriefing specifically tailored for course content.  Prerequisites: Teaching in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5560), Curriculum Design in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5522), Assessment in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5550), or consent of the instructor. Online

Portfolio in Health Professions Education (HPRE 5588) – The portfolio serves to provide integration and reflection on educational experiences throughout the program and to bridge learning to practice.  Components include philosophy of teaching and educational research, self-evaluation, planning tools, accomplishments, teaching and advising documents, assessment strategies, and the personal journal. Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Masters of Health Professions Education. Online

Program Overview

The Masters of Health Professions Education (MHPE) provides an educational research foundation for teaching, assessment and leadership in health professions education. The MHPE curriculum is comprised of twelve courses which focus on the application of learning principles to educational practice. All courses emphasize an applied project based on students’ professional experiences. The educational portfolio serves as an integrative tool across courses, and as a showcase for student accomplishments.
