What attracted you to the program: From the day I interviewed at UMKC, I knew this would be an incredible place to train. I wanted a program that would expose me to a wide variety of preventive medicine, research, and fuel my long-term interest in teaching. With a new fellowship that is designed to focus on preventive cardiovascular medicine in addition to diabetes, obesity, lipidology and nutrition, I will be clinically well-rounded. Furthermore, there was a real sense of collegiality amongst the fellows, faculty, and program leadership. Coming from a strong belief of supporting and healthy environment that value well-being and education, I knew that this program would offer a similar atmosphere and would be a place where I could thrive.

tmchh08_200wUniversity Health Truman Medical Center is an urban, academic medical center located on the same campus as the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) health sciences schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dentistry.  UH TMC provides a broad array of acute and outpatient clinical services to a diverse patient population. It provides primary care and consultative services to 110,000 unique individuals across the lifespan.  It is a 237-bed, Level I trauma center known for programs in asthma, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, high risk obstetrics, ophthalmology, and women’s health.  TMC has been recognized five years in a row by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine as one of Health Care’s “Most Wired” organizations.  UH TMC is the primary clinical training site for the UMKC School of Medicine medical students, and hosts clinical training for the UMKC’s 35 residency and fellowship programs.

University Health Lakewood Medical Center is located in Lee’s Summit, MO, and provides a comprehensive range of primary, preventive, specialty, geriatric, and women’s health services.

Program Overview

The overall objective is for fellows to have clinical experiences that allow for the in-depth observation and management of patients with metabolic conditions that contribute to cardiovascular disease and other complications. The fellow will have clinical and non-clinical experiences that will expose the fellow to those areas of expertise that significantly affect the care of patients with metabolic disorders. Scholarship in the field of cardiometabolic health is required.

Training Sites:
  • University Health Truman Medical Center is an urban, academic safety net hospital in Kansas City, MO, and the primary teaching hospital of the UMKC Health Sciences Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. Approximately 60% of the fellow’s time will be at this site.
  • University Health Lakewood is a suburban, academic hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO, which houses the Community and Family Medicine Department and its residency program. The internal medicine subspecialties provide on-site consultation services in endocrinology, cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, and other specialties. Approximately 40% of the fellow’s time will be at this site.

The fellow spends approximately 60% of their time at University Health Truman Medical Center (UH TMC) and 40% of their time at University Health Lakewood (UH LW). The clinical rotations include longitudinal experiences in preventive cardiology and endocrinology/metabolism with adjunct clinical experiences in sleep medicine, weight management, women’s health, renal medicine, and nutrition. Fellows work with faculty in internal medicine, family medicine, and pharmacology. Protected time is provided to develop and pursue a research project. One elective is included in the curriculum, so that the fellow may tailor the clinical experience, if desired.

Monthly and Weekly Schedule:

  • Lakewood Endocrine and Cardiology Consults (3 months)
  • UH TMC Endocrine Consults and Procedures (3 months)
  • UH TMC Cardiology Consults and Procedures (1 months)
  • UH TMC Research/Specialty Clinics-Sleep, Cardiac Rehab (2 months)
  • UH TMC Weight Management/Specialty Clinics-Women’s Health, Renal, PharmD (2 months)
  • UH TMC Elective Clinics (1 month)
  • UH Lakewood Inpatient Cardiology Clinics one week/month longitudinally
  • UH Lakewood Endocrine Clinic, one clinic per week longitudinally
  • UH Lakewood Cardiology Clinic, one clinic per week longitudinally
  • UH HSD Heart Failure Clinic, one clinic per week longitudinally

Graduate Course: The Curriculum includes one graduate course for research training (Biostatistics I Course-MEDB 5501-Fall Semester). This course is in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics and counts toward either a certificate or master’s degree in clinical research should any fellow wish to pursue additional training/degrees.

The research experience includes formal training in biostatistics. Interested fellows may take additional coursework toward a Certificate in Clinical Research or a Master of Science in Bioinformatics. Training in research methodology is provided online through the NIH Course Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR): https://ocr.od.nih.gov/courses/ippcr_info.html.

A Statistical Consult Service is available through the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine to assist fellows with study design and analysis. Study coordinators are available to assist fellows with IRB applications and research compliance. Research opportunities are available with faculty in endocrinology and cardiology, as well as in related basic and clinic fields with faculty in other departments across an array of fields with cardiometabolic impact. The fellow is expected to present the results of their scholarly activity to the faculty in a conference in June at the close of the academic year.

Quality Improvement & Patient Safety:

There is a didactic curriculum in quality improvement and patient safety. The fellow is expected to complete the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety: www.ihi.org/education/IHIOpenSchool/. The fellow may participate in ongoing quality improvement and patient safety activities as time an interests allow.

Nutrition and Metabolism Fellowship

UMKC School of Medicine

Thank you for your interest in the Nutrition and Metabolism Fellowship program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). This is a one-year, non-ACGME program designed to provide clinical and research training in prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic disease, including obesity, lipids, type 2 diabetes, and nutrition. Graduates will acquire the competencies enter either clinical or academic practice to practice health promotion, disease prevention, care, and treatment for a diverse patient population of all genders–from adolescence to old age–to improve cardiometabolic health and promote healthy aging. The program offers training and experience in both quality improvement and clinical research.

The fellowship is located at University Health of Kansas City, MO. University Health has two campuses: University Health Truman Medical Center is a safety-net hospital co-located in the UMKC Health Sciences District and provides an urban, academic medical center setting; University Health Lakewood is located a few miles away in Lee’s Summit, MO where fellows experience a suburban practice. Although affiliated with the Division of Endocrinology, the fellowship is a collaboration among the faculty in endocrinology, cardiology, and other specialties (nephrology, sleep medicine, weight management, sports medicine, nutrition, etc.), so that fellows have clinical experience in disciplines involved in treatment and prevention of cardiometabolic disease and its complications.

One fellow per year is accepted into the program. The Nutrition and Metabolism fellow interacts with the two Endocrinology fellows in clinic and conferences and with other residents and fellows on clinical rotations in other disciplines. Applicants are accepted who have completed a residency in either internal medicine or family medicine.

The program opened in 2022 and we and the other faculty are excited about the opportunity to train fellows in nutrition and metabolism that impact the important, emerging field of cardiometabolic health.
