Meet Steven Waldman
What was your first job while growing up?

I sold plumbing supplies in Kansas City, Kansas. This is where I met a customer who later ended up being my docent, Bill Sirridge (one of the School of Medicine’s three founding docents).

What prompted you to get involved in research?

I was curious about what worked and what didn't. One of the fun things about a new specialty is that you aren't burdened by the conventional wisdom of the specialty. You get to make it up as you go along. Research was critical as new approaches to the management of pain evolved. It required a more disciplined approach to clarify efficacy and safety, and to separate fact from fiction.

What are your favorites hobbies/hidden talents outside of work?

I spend time with my family, reading and listening to music. I love playing the piano and keyboard. I have absolutely no talent, but I love picking up a fake book and playing away. Again, no talent, so that's why it's a hidden talent!
