Meet Mark Bernhardt
Biography
A 1983 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Dr. Mark Bernhardt completed his orthopaedic surgery training at the University of Kansas – Wichita in 1988. Dr. Bernhardt spent six months of his orthopaedic training in St. Louis at the Shriners Hospital/Washington University program emphasizing pediatric spine deformity and several months at the Accident Hospital of Lorenz Bohler in Vienna, Austria studying traumatology. Dr. Bernhardt completed a Spine Fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Hospital in 1989. He stayed briefly as an Instructor at Harvard, running the Beth Israel Hospital Spine Service and Spine Surgery Fellowship before moving to Kansas City. He has headed our spine service teaching panel at Saint Lukes’s Hospital since his arrival to UMKC in 1990. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Scoliosis Research Society, and Cervical Spine Research Society. Dr. Bernhardt has served on the UMKC Council For Selection, as the President of the Medical Staff of Saint Luke’s, and as the President of the Kansas City Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Bernhardt has numerous publications to his credit, serves as an examiner for the ABOS, and is a reviewer for New England Journal of Medicine. He was appointed by Dean Drees as the Interim Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery on July 1, 2012, replacing Dr. James Hamilton, who retired after 32 years in the position. On July 2, 2013 Dr. Bernhardt was named the Dr. Rex L. Diveley Professor and Chairman of the Department.
