Dean's Message
Sharing our Docent System of learning
The Docent System is an essential part of the foundation of our School of Medicine. And, as you know, it makes our School such a special place to work and learn.
For 45 years, since the day the School was founded, the Docent System has been combining the best of apprenticeship education with small-group learning, mentoring and peer teaching. Today, our Docent System not only continues to thrive, but soon, will receive international attention.
Later this year, a team from the School of Medicine will present the structure and function of our Docent System at the annual meeting of the Association of Medical Education in Europe. This conference attracts more than 3,000 medical educators from over 100 countries and provides a wonderful opportunity to convey our highly successful approach to educating future generations of physicians.
Many of you have shared with me special moments of working with your docent and docent team during your time at the School of Medicine. It is clear that the Docent System is an excellent way to teach and learn medicine and yields lasting memories and life-long friendships. I look forward to learning more about your experiences.
Best wishes,
Steven L. Kanter, M.D.
Dean, UMKC School of Medicine
