SOM celebrates2022 graduates

The UMKC School of Medicine returned to Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on May 13 to celebrate the graduating class of 2022, following a two-year absence due to the COVID pandemic. Two days later, School of Medicine graduating students were part of the more than 2,300 UMKC graduates who participated in the university’s Commencement ceremony at the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium.

From anesthesiology to urology, nearly 100 UMKC students enjoyed Match Day 2022 by matching in 21 different medical specialties. More than a third of the class elected to go into one of the primary care specialties of family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology or pediatrics.

Amelia Howard, a member of the academic support staff for UMKC athletics since 2008, has joined the UMKC Health Sciences Campus as alumni relations director serving the schools of medicine, nursing and health studies, and pharmacy.

Alumni NotesMarianna Sockrider, M.D., ’83, was promoted this year to the rank of full professor (tenured) at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. Sockrider is a pediatric pulmonologist at Texas Children's Hospital and a fellow in the American Thoracic Society. The Not Alone Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to awareness and prevention of kidney disease, has selected Christine Sullivan, M.D., ’85, associate dean for professional development, to receive a Diamond Award for excellence in education leadership and community engagement. She will be honored at the organization's Diamond Awards ceremony in January 2023.
