Virginia Wilson has served as the Program Director since 2019. She is from the Kansas City area with over 25 years of Fire and EMS experience. She is a graduate of the Paramedic Class of 1997 at Grand River Technical School and completed the UMBC Critical Care Paramedic Program in 2000. She is a nationally certified EMS Educator and has been a Lead Instructor and Clinical Coordinator at the University of Missouri – Columbia and the University of Missouri – Kansas City since 2013. She has also served the profession on the State and Federal Level as an EMS Inspector/Investigator and as Program Manager for the Missouri EMS for Children State Partnership Grant. She has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration- Accounting and Bachelor of Science in Photography from the University of Central Missouri. |
EMS Education Medical DirectorErica Carney, M.D., FAEMS |
Dr. Carney has served as the Medical Director since 2015. She is a graduate of the UMKC School of Medicine’s BA/MD program and completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Truman Medical Center. She completed an EMS fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and is a board-certified EMS Physician. Dr. Carney currently practices as a staff physician and member of the faculty in the Emergency Department at Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill. She is also the EMS Medical Director for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. |
EMS Education Assistant Medical DirectorHeather Isom, MD, FACEP |
Dr. Isom has served as the Assistant Medical Director since 2021. She is a graduate of the UMKC School of Medicine’s BA/MD program and completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Truman Medical Center. After residency, she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, followed by St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. She later moved east to Augusta, Georgia, where she was an assistant professor at the Medical College of Georgia, as well as Medical Director for the Emergency Department at St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta, and Medical Director for the Emergency Department at Wills Memorial Hospital, in Washington, Georgia.
In 2006, Dr. Isom returned home to Missouri to join the faculty in the Emergency Department at Truman Medical Center/University of Missouri-Kansas City. In addition to working clinically in the Emergency Department, she serves as Medical Director for the Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE) program at Truman Medical Center as well as the Medical Director for COVERSA, who provides SANE exams to Emergency Departments at multiple hospitals in the Kansas City metro area. Dr. Isom currently practices as a staff physician and member of the faculty in the Emergency Department at Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill.

Nancy has served as the Clinical Coordinator since 2020. She has been a Registered Nurse(RN) for over 30 years, working primarily in the Emergency Department as a Trauma certified RN. Nancy received her Associate Degree of Nursing from Park College in Parkville, MO. She has also completed the following certifications: Trauma Nursing, Chemotherapy, Forensic Nursing, ACLS and PALS. |

Erik Carlsen, Paramedic Erik has been an instructor with the program since its inception in 2012 and with the MAST Ambulance in 2007-2010. He has over 30 years of experience in metro based 911 Services and Hospital Emergency Departments. Erik specializes in Cardiology, Tactical EMS, and Weapons of Mass Destruction Preparation. Erik completed his Paramedic Program in 1994 from Penn Valley Community College. He completed his NAEMSE Instructor course in 2009, is a Tactical Paramedic Instructor and teaches Awareness level Terrorist Bombing class. Erik completed the Weapon of Mass Destruction Advanced Operator course at the COBRA Training Center in 2008, US Dept. Homeland Security, Anniston, AL 2008 and has completed many other specialty trainings. Erik is also the Division Chief, Professional Development Bureau, EMS Education for the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department. |
John Harvey, FP-C, FF/Paramedic, BS
John has been an instructor with the program since 2019. He joined the program full-time in January 2023, following retirement Maimi County EMS where he served 15 years as Battalion Chief/Paramedic. He worked as a flight medic for 1.5 years, and has been in EMS education since 2006. John is also a founding member of Reviving Responders, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the research and education of mental health issues in the first responder/EMS community. John received his Bachelor of Science in Horticulture in December 1983 from Kansas State University, he completed his Critical Care Paramedic in June 2010 from Cowley College, Arkansas City, KS, EMT-Paramedic Studies in June 2009 from IHM Health Studies in Independence, MO and has been an Instructor for various courses since 2009. John also completed his Missouri Firefighter I & II certifications in July 2006, and has completed many additional specialty trainings.

Katee Schimming, Paramedic, MBA, MHA
Katee has been with the program since 2022. She has almost 20 years in EMS with the majority of them as a paramedic. Her experience includes rural and metro based 911 Services and work within Community Hospitals. She has been teaching EMS for more than 10 years and brings a variety of talents to our program. Katee received a Master of Business Administration & HR Management in May 2018, Master of Healthcare Administration in December 2016, and Graduate Certificate in Disaster & Emergency Management in May 2015 from Park University, Parkville, MO. Katee received her Bachelor of Applied Science & Medical Management in May 2014 from Siena Heights University, Adrian, MI and her Associate of Applied Science & Paramedics in December 2004 from Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS. Katee is an Assistant Division Chief, in Professional Development Bureau, EMS Education for the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department.

William Gulick, NRP, BS
Bill was a Lead EMS Instructor for the UMKC EMS program from 2012-2020 he retired briefly and returned in May of 2023. Bill has almost 40 years of experience as a Paramedic. He began his Paramedic career in 1985, with the Medevac Mid-America, Inc (MAST System) which was acquired by the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department(KCFD) in 2010. Bill filled multiple management positions during his career, and retired from KCFD in 2020 after serving 5 years as a Division Chief. Bill received his Bachelor of Science in Biology in August 1983 from Pennsylvania State University. He completed Paramedic Certification in December 1984 at the Paramedic Training Institute. Bill has been an EMS Instructor since 1994, and an Evaluator for National Registry Psychomotor Skills & Scenario Examinations since 2014. He is also a CEVO & All Safe Driving Instructor, Tactical Medic and SCUBA diver.

Maria McAhan, EMT
Maria has been an instructor with the program since its inception in 2012. She has 28 years of experience as an EMT, with 15 years of service in the metro based 911 MAST ambulance service. She was an Instructor with the MAST Ambulance service in 2009-2010. Maria has served as a State EMS skills evaluator since 2005. Maria completed her EMT certification in 1995 with the Missouri Ambulance Service Trust (MAST). She continues to actively participate in EMS community outreach in a multitude of ways, including the Community Emergency Response Team and community CPR activities.
