Our Mission

Develop family physicians who will improve the health of the communities they serve by being leaders in the practice of high quality, comprehensive, resource-conscious, compassionate, personal and patient-centered care across the lifespan.

Our training institution, University Health is an academic health center providing accessible, state-of-the-art quality healthcare to our community regardless of the ability to pay. The UMKC SOM Family Medicine Program at University Health Lakewood Medical Center supports the mission of University Health, and in addition strives to:

  • Provide the highest quality of education to family medicine residents
  • Provide the best possible medical care and service to our patients
  • Advance the specialty of family medicine
  • Improve the health of our community

Aims

Provide a residency experience that emphasizes the practice of the full spectrum of Family Medicine including; hospital care, maternity care, sports medicine, geriatrics, procedures, behavioral health (including Medication-Assisted Treatment or MAT), population/community health (including understanding of health disparities and commitment towards working to address those disparities within our community) and excellence in ambulatory care, including “virtual health care”.

Prepare graduates to practice in any setting: urban, suburban, rural, or mission field, with emphasis on addressing the needs of under-served and vulnerable populations.

Prepare graduates to be excellent teachers and mentors for medical students, encouraging them to emulate their role models and become family physicians.

Provide training in a nurturing, diverse and inclusive environment in which everyone is valued.

Instill the values of servant leadership through which residents develop into physician leaders providing compassionate, team-based care emphasizing quality improvement and a passion for lifelong learning and discovery.

Emphasize the importance of physician wellness in all aspects of our lives by teaching healthy lifestyles, and the care of self and others.
