The School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity and Community Partnership is launching a new award to celebrate individuals, organization and units engaged in efforts that create a more inclusive institutional culture that promotes success for all.
The Award for Excellence in Diversity and Health Equity in Medicine recognizes efforts to advance the understanding of health equity, health disparities, cultural competency in medicine, and greater access and opportunities for surrounding community.
Awards will be given in two categories: student or student organization, and faculty, staff, resident and/or organization/department.
Nominees should have made consistent contributions to diversity, inclusion, cultural competency or health equity in one or more of the following areas:
- Recruiting and/or retaining a diverse student or faculty body
- Facilitating an inclusive environment of success for all
- Working to promote health equity and the elimination of health disparities
- Strengthening efforts to develop or implement cultural competency strategies that improve health care delivery.
Nomination letters should provide specific details and examples concerning the nominee’s sustained commitment to diversity and the impact of that commitment on medical education or a related area based upon the qualifying criteria. Nomination materials should be sent by e-mail to Susan B. Wilson Ph.D, associate dean for Diversity and Community Partnership, at email@example.com.
All students, full and part-time School of Medicine faculty, staff, residents and UMKC departments, units and organizations are eligible for the awards. Winners will receive a commemorative wall plaque or similar recognition.
The SOM Office of Diversity and Community Partnership will convene a Diversity Award Selections Committee to review all nominations. Awards will be presented during the Shannon Lectureship in February. Faculty recipients will also be recognized during the annual faculty dinner.
