Graduation day at the UMKC School of Medicine is getting even bigger this year.

Fourteen members of the inaugural class of the Master of Medical Science Physician Assistant program will join the commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. on May 23 at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium Music Hall.

Three years ago, for the first time, the school brought together all of its graduate and professional degree recipients for one ceremony. This year, 126 graduates will receive degrees or graduate certificates in seven programs. Those are: Doctor of Medicine, Master of Science in Anesthesia, Master of Medical Science Physician Assistant, Master of Science Bioinformatics, Master of Health Professions Education, Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research and Graduate Certificate in Pediatric and Congenital Cardiovascular Perfusion.

With 93 students in this year’s class of M.D. graduates, nearly 3,500 physicians will have earned their medical degrees at UMKC since the school opened its doors in 1971.

Steven Kanter, M.D., School of Medicine dean, will deliver the keynote message to this year’s class.

Jason Wright, M.D. ’99, is this year’s alumni speaker. An internationally recognized expert on gynecologic cancer treatment and researcher on comparative effectiveness in women’s health, Wright will receive the 2016 E. Grey Dimond, M.D., Take Wing Award during the annual Take Wing Lectureship at noon on May 23.

The school will also present its annual student awards for outstanding achievement.
