What stands out to me the most is the people who make up the UMKC Psychiatry Residency Program. The faculty, residents, and staff genuinely care about you and your success. Everyone is very approachable and supportive, which helps generate a positive climate for training.

My favorite rotation has been the combined medication management and psychotherapy clinic during our outpatient training. Val Bellman, M.D., Psy.D.

Medical School: Sechenov University
Professional Interests
I have a deep professional interest in inpatient psychiatry, interventional psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and palliative care. In inpatient psychiatry, I focus on providing specialized care to patients with severe mental health conditions in a hospital setting. Interventional psychiatry allows me to utilize procedures like electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation to address mental health disorders. Psychosomatic medicine is an area I’m passionate about, as it involves understanding the connection between the mind and physical health conditions, taking a holistic approach to patient care. Lastly, in palliative care, I strive to provide compassionate support to individuals with serious illnesses, managing symptoms and improving their quality of life.
Outside Interests
Beyond my professional pursuits, I enjoy time with friends, traveling, and spending quality moments with my dog.
If you had to pick one thing you really like about this program, what would it be?
If I had to pick one thing that I really like about this psychiatry residency, it would be the wide exposure to a diverse range of psychopathologies. This program has provided me with invaluable opportunities to encounter and learn about various mental health conditions. The exposure to different psychopathologies has deepened my understanding of psychiatric disorders and honed my diagnostic skills. It has allowed me to develop a comprehensive approach to patient care, ensuring that I can effectively address the unique needs of each individual. This breadth of exposure has been instrumental in shaping me into a well-rounded and competent psychiatrist.
What has been your favorite rotation so far?
It’s difficult to choose just one favorite rotation, as each has offered unique learning experiences and valuable insights. However, if I had to pick, I would say that my time in both the Inpatient Psychiatry and CL Psychiatry rotations have been particularly fulfilling. Both rotations have deepened my understanding of psychiatric disorders, refined my clinical skills, and reinforced my passion for providing comprehensive care to individuals with mental health needs.

If you had to pick one thing you really like about this program, what would it be?
Our program coordinator Sherry Bushmoyer! I didn’t notice how much that could sway my opinion on the culture of a program until I started interviews. Mrs. Bushmoyer was definitely on top of things during the season when I was a 4th year student, and all throughout residency now that I am in my 4th and final year.
What has been your favorite rotation so far?
Tie between our acute inpatient and adult outpatient service
What do you like to do for fun in and around Kansas City?
I make it a goal to try out a new restaurant at least once a week. Goal is to have tried about 200 places by the end of all 4 years. So far after 38 months I’m up to roughly 160 places. 40 restaurants and 10 months to go!
What are your future career plans?
Still ironing out what I would like to do in the immediate future but right now I have an interest in both adult inpatient and outpatient Psychiatry

Medical School: University of Missouri School of Medicine
Professional Interests
Pain Medicine, Addiction Psychiatry, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Outside Interests
Powerlifting, Running, Swimming, Movies, Comic Books, Reading
If you had to pick one thing you really like about this program, what would it be?
I appreciate the wide variety of psychopathology, and co-morbid medical illness, we see as our residency program is couched in a large, urban center in a resource-poor safety net hospital system, as well as a state forensics hospital. Plainly speaking, we see a lot of very, very sick, very interesting, very extreme patients which prepares us to practice psychiatry anywhere in any circumstance. I particularly appreciate the availability of a wide variety of psychiatric exposure including seeing patients in county jail and child psychiatry. One of the main draws of this program for me was the availability to work in the Pain Medicine department and utilize my psychiatry training in addition to gaining procedural and medical experience in this interdisciplinary field.
What has been your favorite rotation so far?
Pain Medicine, though I also have enjoyed Consult-Liaison, Addiction Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
What do you like to do for fun in and around Kansas City?
Powerlifting, Running, Swimming, Movies, Comic Books, Reading. In Kansas City, I enjoy my neighborhood the River Market and the farmers market on weekends.
What are your future career plans?
Unsure at this point, though considering fellowship.
