SOM and Saint Luke’s doctor leads Mid America Heart Institute in 500th heart transplant

Led by Michael Borkon, M.D., UMKC School of Medicine clinical professor of surgery and surgical director of cardiac transplantation at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute recently recorded its 500th heart transplant.

Borkon, who also serves as co-executive medical director of the Mid America Heart Institute, led the surgical team that performed the transplant on June 15. Only 27 hospitals nationwide have recorded 500 adult heart transplants.

“This is an exciting milestone,” Borkon said in a press release.

Saint Luke’s offers the only cardiac transplant program in Kansas City and the surrounding area and ranks among the top 10 for number of adult transplants nationwide with more than 30 procedures a year for the past six years. The Mid America Heart Institute celebrated its 25th anniversary of cardiac transplantation last year.
