SOM researcher receives postdoctoral award

Neerupma Silswal, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the department of basic medical science, recently received a two-year fellowship award from the American Heart Association to conduct a study that could open new avenues for the design of novel therapeutic interventions for cardiovascular disease.

The $95,000 award is for the study, “Regulation of intracellular Ca2+by PI(3,5)P2: a novel pathway for control of vascular smooth muscle contraction.” This study is the first to examine how a PI lipid may alter vascular function via its actions on calcium signaling.

Silswal works in the laboratory of cerebrovascular research with Jon Andresen, Ph.D., assistant professor of basic medical science.
