Meet Michael Casner
Dr. Casner was born in Indianapolis but grew up all over the US. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for undergraduate and completed as master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of Texas. He then attended medical school at Vanderbilt University where he served as Class and Student Body President. Dr. Casner completed residency at UCLA – Olive View and was a Chief Resident in his final year. During his chief year, he developed an interest in both academics and medical administration, and he chose to pursue the latter by completing an Administration Fellowship with Vituity after graduation. He has since worked in community emergency departments in both Chicago and Kansas City.
Initially a part-time faculty member, Dr. Casner realized he preferred working in the academic environment, working alongside and teaching residents and medical students. In January 2021, he joined the UMKC/Truman faculty full-time and is currently the Assistant Director of the emergency medicine clerkship. Dr. Casner has a number of interests within emergency medicine and is taking some time to figure out his niche. He has a particular interest in new modalities of medical education and has been featured on the EM:RAP podcast, the top audio program in emergency medicine with over 20,000 international listeners every month.
In his free time, Dr. Casner enjoys physical fitness, baking, international travel, and fundraising for HIV/AIDS charitable organizations. He is an active member of the Kansas City AIDS Service Foundation. Every year in summer, Dr. Casner participates as either a cyclist or volunteer physician in the AIDS LifeCycle, a 545-mile weeklong bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles that is the world’s largest HIV/AIDS fundraising event. Most of the time, however, you can find he and his husband Patrick enjoying downtime at home with their Labrador Stanley and two rescue cats, Perry and Hamilton.
