Abat Khan, M.D.

Medical School: Khyber Medical College, Peshawar
Bio: I was born and raised in the north of Pakistan and finished my medical school in Peshawar city, famous for its delicious foods. I moved to US for better education and career and my goal is to become an excellent physician.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I liked the friendly and supportive environment of the UMKC and camaraderie of the residents. I love the different variety of food and weather of Kansas city.
What are your interests? I want to hang out with my friends, like BBQ and spent most of my time outdoors.

Medical School: Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine
Bio: II was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, where I went to medical school. Soon after my graduation, I moved to the US to start training in internal medicine and pursue my ultimate career goal of becoming a cardiologist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: UMKC has the recipe for the perfect residency program: a whole bunch of amazing people (residents and faculty), an immersive educational experience in an academic environment, clinical practice in diverse settings, and perfect work-life balance.
In Kansas City, be it shopping, dining, jogging or kayaking, your favorite entertainment will always be minutes away.
What are your interests? Reading, puzzles, & horse riding.

Ali Ibrahim
Andrew Manalo, M.D.

Medical School: University of Missouri – Kansas City, School of Medicine
Bio: I was born and raised in KC. I’ve been lucky enough to have physician parents that also went to medical school and residency training here at UMKC. I grew up spending plenty of time with my parent’s medical school friends which grew my interest in medicine.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? I went to UMKC for medical school and feel as if it was a great place to stay for residency training. I always had a great experience with the residents at that time and wanted to be a part of that team. As for Kansas City, I have lived here my entire life and loved it. Many people that have come to KC for medical school and residency find out in their short time that this is the place they would like to stay.
What are your interests? I love spending time with my fiancé, friends, and family. I also enjoy playing sports, going to KC Chiefs, Royals, and Sporting KC games, and playing video games.

Medical School: King Edward Medical University
Bio: I was born and raised in a small town in Pakistan. Love for medicine brought me to USA after completion of my medical studies in Pakistan. I want to become a cardiologist and pursue an academic career.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: UMKC offers an amazing blend of a diverse working environment and medical learning. Kansas City is very peaceful.
What are your interests? Sports, Exploring new places.

Brian Schroeder, M.D.

Medical School: Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg
Bio: I was born and raised in Kansas City and completed my undergraduate degree in business at Washington University in Saint Louis. After deciding to switch careers I attended medical school in Germany and have returned home to pursue my dream of practicing pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?:Despite having been away for over a decade, Kansas City has always been my home. The growth that KC has experienced while I’ve been away has not diminished the Midwestern hospitality and friendliness that makes KC such a wonderful place to live and work. As the son of a UMKC School of Medicine graduate I was aware of the world class training that they have to offer while still holding on to the Midwestern charm and friendliness.
What are your interests? Photography, climbing, skiing, and scuba diving.

Cody Shopper, D.O.

Medical School: NYITCOM at Arkansas State
Bio: I was born and raised in Kansas City and moved to the University of Arkansas to complete my Bachelors and Honors thesis in kinesiology. I matriculated across the state to Jonesboro, AR for medical school, and thankfully returned home to UMKC for residency.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I chose UMKC because of the academic environment, strong fellowship match rates, and location. My favorite things about Kansas City are the River Market, Messenger coffee, First Watch, McClain’s bakery, Chiefs and Royals, and the Negro League Baseball Museum.
What are your interests? Sports, reading, movies, lifting, and cooking.

Cody Shopper
Fouad Jaber, M.D.

Medical School: Cairo University, Egypt
Bio: Between the obstacles in Gaza, Palestine, the maturity in Egypt, and the aspirations in Kansas City -USA, lies a challenging story.

I was born in Palestine, and I finished medical school at Cairo University- Egypt. Afterward, I spent a year in the US doing observerships in Cleveland Clinic and KMC, in California. Besides, I did 9- months of research as a Clinical Research Assistant. My goal is to be an interventional Cardiologist and to work as an academic professor too. In the long term, I aspire to establish an organization to teach and help medical students in my country and to help underserved populations in my community. I do believe “Do not limit your challenges but challenge your limits”.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?:The most vital feature is the friendly environment inside the program and the supportive faculty and coordinators. Additionally, UMKC is a well-recognized institution with strong clinical training and diversity as you are training in two hospitals. I always say that I never regret choosing UMKC as my top choice in the ranking list. I love everything about Kansas City including Barbecue, sports, and museums. It is a small city with a spirit of a big city, and I do guess it is a perfect city for work-life balance.
What are your interests? Basketball, volleyball, Tennis, acting, PlayStation games (especially FIFA), athletic commenting, travel, hang out with family and friends, trying new cuisines and restaurants.

Ifrah Fatima, M.B.B.S.

Medical School: Osmania Medical College
Bio: I was born and raised in Hyderabad, India (and Qatar for a while) , where I finished medical school and then moved to Kansas City for residency. My career goal is to be an academic Hematologist/Oncologist and to work towards health equity.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: For the diversity, support, and friendly working environment at the foreground of the program with the background of unique training opportunities at two distinct sites. Love Kansas City for its warm and helpful people, great parks, and interesting museums. There’s something here for everybody.
What are your interests? Soccer, music, gymnastics, cooking.

Medical School: Cairo University School of Medicine
Bio: I was born and raised in Dubai, UAE, then moved to Cairo, Egypt, where I finished my medical school. My career goal is to be a Cardiologist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: UMKC has a well-developed training program that widens your scope and molds you into becoming an excellent physician within a family setting of residents and attendings.
Kansas city’s weather, BBQ, friendly community and the light traffic are things that make it stand out. If you’re a sports fan, the Royals and the Chiefs will keep you up cheering.
What are your interests? I want to hang out with my friends, like BBQ and spent most of my time outdoors.

Medical School: American University of the Caribbean
Bio: I was born and raised in Leawood, KS, went to boarding school in Greensboro, NC and then medical school in St. Maarten (clinicals in NYC). My fellowship goals are still undecided (stuck between two!) but I love academic medicine.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I chose UMKC because of the people- I was drawn in from the moment my interview started and it has only gotten better. KC is my home, and such a vibrant city.
What are your interests? I love watching and playing sports, I’m an avid KC Chiefs fan but will watch any good sports game (World Cup, Olympics, etc).

Medical School: Kasturba Medical College
Bio: My career goal is to be a cardiologist and pursue research at the intersection of public health and medicine. I am interested in outcomes research and enhancing patient centered care.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: UMKC was my top choice because of the people and opportunities for mentorship across the breadth of medicine. Kansas City is a true Midwest gem! There is lots to do from sports to exploring fantastic restaurants.
What are your interests? Yoga, squash, kayaking, gardening, traveling

Keerat Gill, M.D.

Medical School: St. George’s University
Bio: I was born in India, and moved to Vancouver, Canada during high school. I’ve since lived all over North America, UK, and Grenada. I’m keeping an open mind, but so far between outpatient IM vs Heme-Onc.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I chose UMKC because it’s located in a perfectly mid-sized, vibrant city, offers great work-life balance, and the supportive faculty/staff. I love Kansas City for its BBQ, sports, café’s, fountains, and above all, the amazing people!
What are your interests? Hiking, travelling, theatre, stand-up comedy, binge-watching TV shows

Mariam Haji, M.D.

Medical School: Ains Shams University
Bio: I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, where I went to medical school. My career goal is to become an Oncologist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: UMKC is a robust training program that has a great academic reputation and many research opportunities. Working in two different settings, Truman and St Luke’s, provides exposure to a diverse patient population, with a wide array of backgrounds and pathologies. I, also, love how welcoming and warm the work environment is. Kansas City is a perfectly balanced city, where there are lots of things to do while still enjoying some peace and serenity.
What are your interests? Reading, watching movies and Yoga.

Bio: I grew-up in Karachi where I completed my graduation. After getting married I moved to Kansas city to pursue my career in medicine. My dream is to be an academic intensivist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I chose UMKC because of its diverse clinical opportunities and best learning environment.

Bio: I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and came to UMKC for the 6 year program. I met my husband in KC and we decided to stay here for residency.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I fell in love with Kansas City and UMKC throughout my 6 years here as a student. Everyone is so kind and friendly, and the city has so much to offer. I knew I would have lots of support and exceptional training at my home program.
What are your interests? Spending time with family and friends, exercising, traveling, trying new restaurants

Medical School: University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine
Bio:I was born in Kuwait but grew up entirely in St. Louis, MO. I attended medical school here in Kansas City and it was a very positive experience. My career goal is to become a primary care physician and/or hospitalist… or maybe do a fellowship. I am keeping an open mind.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: UMKC has such kind and welcoming students, residents, and staff, and Kansas City is a beautiful, growing city to live in. I have been here for 6 years and I am excited I get to stay longer.
What are your interests? Baking cookies, vlogging, and spending time with family and friends.

Medical School: Osmania Medical College, India
Bio: I was born and raised in Hyderabad, India. I finished my medical school in my hometown and moved to the US for residency. Cardiology is my career goal.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I chose UMKC because of the friendly and supportive residents and faculty. I love KC because it’s a big city with the perks of a small city.
What are your interests? Hiking, soccer, and basketball.

Medical School: Cairo University School of Medicine
Bio: I was born and raised in Egypt , where I finished my medical school then moved to the US. I am interested in Critical Care Nephrology.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: Super nice people and the cultural diversity provide the best environment to work and live in. A lot of fun and barbecue here in Kansas city.
What are your interests? Playing soccer, reading, going out in adventures and travelling.

Bio: I grew up in Hyderabad, India and went to medical school there. I moved to Kansas City to pursue residency in internal medicine. I would like to become an academic gastroenterologist and contribute to clinical research.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: Friendly residents, supportive faculty and the learning opportunities that arise from working in two different hospital settings. Kansas City offers everything a major cosmopolitan has – minus the nasty traffic! Love the vibe in the Plaza area, and the scenic parks and lakes.
What are your interests? Photography, music and automobiles.

Medical School: Hashemite University of Jordan
Bio: I was born and raised in Amman, Jordan, where I finished my medical school. I moved to the states in 2020 and worked in research for one and a half year. Then, moved to KC for residency. I am open to everything for future career plans.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: I chose UMKC because it provides us with the autonomy and supervision we need to become an outstanding physicians. Also, KC has great nature, weather and food!
