Islam Abdelkarim, M.D., M.Sc.

Medical School: Assiut University

Dr. Islam AbdelkarimBio: Between the cataracts of the Nile in Aswan and the banks of Missouri River in Kansas City, lies a long journey that included some beautiful cities in three continents; Cairo, Kuwait City, Pittsburgh and Chicago. However, none of the beautiful cities I mentioned lured me to stay, for at least six years of my life, like what Kansas City did. The next step of my life is going to be pursuing academic hospital medicine career and to continue my research work in geriatric cardiology.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? Kansas City is that kind of a city that I would see myself settle down at after that long journey. I would feel comfortable calling Kansas City my home!
What are your interests? Photography, soccer and writing.

Anas Al Bawaliz, M.D.

Medical School: University of Jordan

Dr. Anas Al-BawalizBio: I was born and raised in Jordan. After earning me medical degree, I moved to the U.S. with my beloved family to pursue my career goals in hematology/oncology.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? UMKC IM training program is a well-recognized academic program that is well known for its cultural diversity and outstanding graduates’ performance. Further, it provides a rich and distinct experience by combining training at both sites; TMC and SLH.
What are your interests? Swimming, Tennis, Basketball

Ahmad Al-Shyoukh, M.D.

Medical School: Jordan University of Science and Technology

Dr. Ahmad ShyokhBio: I was born and raised in Jordan where I attended Medical school. I worked in King Hussein Cancer center before I joined residency at UMKC.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? The people in the program and the camaraderie among them. I love Kansas City BBQ.

Diala Alawneh, M.D.

Medical School: Jordan University of Science and Technology

Dr. Diala AlawnehBio: I was born in Jordan then moved as a baby to New York where I was raised for 12 years before heading back home. I finished med school in Jordan. Now here I am back in the States doing residency with the goal of becoming a rheumatologist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? Everyone here is very nice. I enjoyed the company and the city itself is a great place to be.
What are your interests? Reading, going on adventures, and food!

Reda Asad, M.D.

Medical School: Mutah University

Dr. Reda AsadBio: I was born and raised in Jordan. I finished my medical school there and moved to the US. My career goal is to be an Endocrinologist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? I moved from home to my second home “Kansas city” where I rejoined my best friend and BROTHER.
What are your interests? Soccer and football

Sheetal Bulchandani, M.D.

Medical School: Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical college, Mumbai, India.

Dr. Sheetal BulchandaniBio: I was born and raised in Mumbai, India. I moved to Kansas City for my Internal Medicine residency.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?
When I interviewed at UMKC I felt the residents were truly happy! had the opportunity to visit Kansas City many times while my sister was completing her residency; coming back here gave me a sense of familiarity. Kansas City provides best of both worlds; a big city with small town advantages; so much to see, do and experience but no crazy traffic ever!
What are your interests? I like running, reading and traveling, trying out new cuisines and restaurants.
Where do you live? I live in the Plaza area, it’s a great area with many restaurants, wide avenues and pretty fountains.
Suguni Loku Galappaththy, M.D.

Medial School: Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka

Dr. Suguni GalappaththyBio: I was born in Minsk, Belarus but lived in Colombo, Sri Lanka until I moved to USA in 2017. My career goal is to become a Rheumatologist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? Kansas City is great! It has a big city feel with small town friendliness. UMKC is a great university program with focus on clinical training and research alike.
What are your interests? Traveling, Food and Swimming

Medical School: Osmania Medical College

Dr. Rahul MyadeamBio: I was born and raised in South India, where I finished my medical school then moved to the U.S. My career goal is to be an academic cardiologist
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? UMKC and Kansas City seemed like ‘second home’ to me right when I interviewed here. I strongly feel that UMKC provides well rounded training in two different hospital settings. The things I love about Kansas City include the sporting culture, museums, and most importantly the easy commute to work!
What are your interests? I love to spend time with my family, take evening walks along the Missouri River, listen to music.

Raed Qarajeh, M.D.

Medical School: University of Jordan School of Medicine

Dr. Raed QarajehBio: I was born and raised in Jordan. I grew up in Aqaba, a beautiful costal city situated at the northeastern tip of the Red Sea. After I finished my medical school in Jordan, I moved to the US for residency. I would like to become an academic cardiologist, dividing my time between clinical work and research.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? I chose UMKC because of the people, the strong training program, and the city. I could feel that residents were happy, very welcoming, intelligent, and down to earth. The program director, Dr. Wooldridge, was obviously very passionate about improving the program and cared very much about his residents as well as the applicants. Plus, working in two hospitals with diverse patient population makes the training at UMKC unique and strong. Also, I fell in love with Kansas City! I enjoy exploring local restaurants and coffee shops with my friends. I love the River Market area and the Plaza!
What are your interests? Monofin Swimming, Scuba diving, traveling with friends, reading, listening to Umm Kulthum’s songs and music.

Mary Grace Schueler, D.O.

Medical School: Kansas City University

Dr. Mary Grace SchuelerBio: I moved all over growing up, with my family now living in Indiana. I am married and
my husband and I enjoy traveling and scuba diving! I will be applying for jobs as a hospitalist this year, with plans of staying in the KC area.
Why did I choose UMKC? I rotated at UMKC as a medical student and enjoyed working with the attendings and residents. I chose UMKC because of the residents, the collegial atmosphere, and how much of an advocate Dr. Wooldridge is as a program director.
What are your interests? Traveling, scuba diving, hanging out with friends and my husband.

Medical School: KU Med

Dr. Ray SegebrechtBio: I am from Lawrence and love running and hiking and traveling and spending time outdoors. My favorite field in IM is cardiology.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? I chose UMKC because of the great people and leadership and opportunities to help underserved patients. Kansas City is a very fun and pleasant city that was close to family as well.
What are your interests? I love eating out and spending time with family and friends and exercising.

Medical School: Bhaskar Medical College, India

Dr. Annapoorna SinghBio: I was born and raised in Hyderabad, India. I did my medical school in Hyderabad and moved to the US for residency training. I am planning on hospitalist/internist job after my residency training.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? Kansas City is a second home. Love the midwestern culture, people, and tradition. Undoubtedly the best barbecue food in the US.

Claire Smith, BLA, M.D.

Medical School: University of Missouri-Kansas City

Dr. Claire SmithBio: I was born and raised in a rural Missouri town and loved every minute of it! I moved to Kansas City at the age of 18 where I eventually graduated from the combined BLA/MD program at UMKC. I am married and we have tow beautiful kiddos: Ameila 5 and Saunders 2. I want to practice rural combined inpatient and outpatient medicine, and I have a love for critical care.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? I chose UMKC because both the Internal medicine program and Kansas City were simply too wonderful to leave. As a student I had 6 months of inpatient internal medicine, and immediately loved the docent system/multidisciplinary approach to rounding and learning. I had a baby in medical and always felt to supported both in my career and family life by faculty and staff; this has continued over the past two years as a resident physician. I also love the diversity in teaching offered by practicing medicine bath at TMC and SLH.
What are your interests? I love to chase my two kiddos, spend time with family, travel, and be outdoors (boating, gardening, hiking, camping, beach going).
Where do you live? Brookside. It is a fabulous neighborhood for young professionals and families.
Stephanie Suddaby, M.D.

Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine

Dr. Stephanie SuddabyBio: I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia (how about that, eh?) and grew up in Buffalo, NY, where I became an American, interested in medicine, and tremendously disappointed year after year with the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bills (but still love them regardless). I will be one of your chief residents in 2021-2022 and my career goal is to be a hospitalist with focus on resident/medical student education and program leadership.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? During medical school, I was fortunate enough to complete my internal medicine core rotation and internal medicine sub-internship at St. Luke’s Hospital, one of our two teaching hospitals. The faculty and residents were all approachable, kind, engaging and great teachers and role models.I love that Kansas City has all the amenities of a big city, but not a lot of the headaches. Kansas City is a very welcoming place with great food, great people, and sports teams that ACTUALLY win. How ‘bout those CHIEFS!?
What are your interests? Ice hockey, baseball, football, cycling, skiing, martial arts (Tae Kwon Do), checking out new restaurants/bakeries, trivia, taking my dog for walks, sleeping in, and eating…a lot.

Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine

Dr. Ben WhittBio: I was born and raised in North Carolina, but have called Kansas City home for the past 4 years. I hope to specialize in Infectious Disease.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? From working with UMKC residents during medical school I knew how well-prepared they were and how hard the program worked to support them.

Dr. Harris ZamirBio: I was born in Kansas City and raised in Overland Park. I can’t imagine myself being anywhere else!
