Why did you choose UMKC? I chose UMKC because it will offer a great opportunity for me to pursue my career in critical care medicine. I love spending time with my wife and Kansas city is a family-friendly city where there’s plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors.

Bio: I was born in Sudan and raised between Sudan and Qatar. I have work experience in Qatar. I graduated with a passion for internal medicine, medical education and endocrinology (Diabetes care in particular), which remains to be my career goal after internal medicine residency.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? UMKC and Kansas City met my requirements in regards to the training program itself and a place to live. It has a good balance between clinical activities, teaching, research, friendly staff, work-life balance, and a good boost toward fellowship goals. Kansas City is a family-friendly place.
What are your interests? I love playing soccer, water sports , reading books, outing with friends and family as well as traveling.

Yazan Almohtasib, M.D.

Bio: I was born and raised in Doha- Qatar, the little Peninsula in The Gulf area. At the same time, I am originally from Jordan. As for me, I have always been feeling attached to both Jordan and Qatar. I believe since high school, I have been passionate about being in the academic field. My main goal is to combine academic and clinical fields in Cardiology/Pulmonary and critical care.
Why did you choose UMKC, and what do you love about Kansas City? I was fortunate to know about Kansas City, especially UMKC from my friends and colleagues. Obviously, we get all the support we need to establish our careers. Kansas City is peaceful and calm, and I am excited to know more about KC.
What are your interests? Swimming, and reading books, I am excited to learn Mua Thai.

Saqr Alsakarneh, M.D.
Medical School: Al-Balqa Applied University Faculty of Medicine
Bio: I was born and raised in Amman, Jordan. I love extracurricular activities. Therefore I founded an organization that provides medical missions to the underprivileged people and was the president of the students’ council at my university. On the other side, I love internal medicine and have a long-term goal of becoming a Gastroenterologist working in academic settings.
Why did you choose UMKC, and what do you love about Kansas City? I ranked UMKC on the top of my list because it is a University-based program with a very strong academic record and a very high fellowship match rate. Additionally, being trained at two large and very advanced hospitals is a big plus. I like the fact that Kansas City is a big city but at the same time feels like a small town.
What are your interests? I love Soccer, hiking, traveling, and video games. Of course, trying new food and doing BBQ is a big thing also!

Francisco Cabral Amador, M.D.
Medical School: Universidad de Montemorelos Escuela de Medicina
Bio: I was born and raised in Sonora, Mexico. My parents, who were unconditionally compassionate for those who were most in need, inspired me to pursue a career in Medicine. I went to medical school in Montemorelos, Mexico. I volunteered in several medical brigades throughout the north and south of Mexico while I was in medical school and after I graduated. I did postdoctoral research fellow in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Missouri, Columbia, before beginning my residency. After completing my residency, I plan to pursue a fellowship in cardiology.
Why did you choose UMKC? UMKC is a recognized institution well known for training residents with a strong medical experience. University Health and St. Luke’s Hospital provide the perfect learning environment to become a qualified physician to work in an outpatient or inpatient setting. In addition, UMKC is a university-based program with great academic resources, a very friendly environment to work in, and a diverse community to learn from other cultures. The University of Missouri has a special place in my heart, and that’s why I’d choose it again. KC is a metropolis with the advantages of a small city: good people, food, parks, near state parks, and a nice spring and summer.
What are your interests? I like outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping. Also, spending time with family is a priority, and having a good “carnitas asada”(barbecue) with family and friends is at the top of my list. I love to travel and learn about new places, cultures, and foods. I like to play and watch soccer.

Bio: I was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. For medical school I attended UMKC’s Six Year BA/MD Program. Career wise, I’m currently undecided on being a hospitalist vs primary care, so I’m keeping an open mind for all future options.
Why did you choose Kansas City and what do you love about Kansas City? UMKC offered strong clinical training with a diverse patient population at its training hospitals. I love that Kansas City nearly always has something going on for people to try or do in the city. I’m especially excited that KC appears to be getting more recognition of what it has to offer, as it will be a host city in the 2026 Fifa World Cup!
What are your interests? Soccer, table tennis, bowling, video games, trivia nights. I like trying new restaurants and going to events around KC with friends.

Bio: I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, where I went to medical school. Right after graduation, I moved to the US to start my Internal Medicine residency.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about KC? The camaraderie and friendly environment that I noticed since my interview day. The opportunity to have a diverse training experience at two different hospitals, University Heath and St Luke’s, with different patient populations. In addition, KC is a perfect sized city with lots of activities to do without the hustle and bustle of a larger metropolis.

Patricio Marcos Gonzalez, M.D.
Medical School: Universidad de Monterrey Facultad de Medicina
Bio: I was born and raised in Mexico. I earned my medical degree from Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico. Since my early years in medicine, I had the opportunity to participate in a year-long observership program in Houston Tx in St. Joseph Hospital. Afterward, I joined Zambrano Hellion Hospital to work as a research assistant in Cardiology. After graduating I worked as a research fellow in Retinal diseases and clinical studies, where I received a postdoctoral fellow in this area.
Why did you choose UMKC? I finished my first year in Internal Medicine at UTRGV/DHR McAllen program. For my second year, I was transferred to IM UMKC Program, happy and excited to be part of this excellent group that received me, and ready to excel in the care of patients.
What are your interests? I love football soccer in general, watching it, playing it, and talking about it, I also like playing board games with friends and knowing new places with my wife.

Bio: I am from Sudan, where I finished medical school. Internal medicine was always a passion, and I had the chance to have clinical experience as I worked at Hamad Medical Corporation in the State of Qatar with interest in infectious diseases.
Why did you choose UMKC, and what do you love about Kansas City? When I applied for the residency, I was looking for a training program to enhance my medical experience, add to my knowledge, and take me through an exceptional training journey. UMKC was the one to fulfill all that. Kansas City is a very welcoming and family-friendly city. I did not feel away from home on arrival. People are very supportive and helpful. It is very quiet and the most important thing, NO TRAFFIC JAM 😊
What are your interests? I like fishing because it clears my mind and thoughts and relaxes me. Also, I enjoy practicing football.

Bio: I was born and raised in a small town called Tenali, India. Was a happy-go-lucky guy in my hometown until highschool and then moved to Hyderabad for medschool. From Hyderabad to Kansas City was a big leap emotionally, culturally. I’ve had this passion for procedures and like to be adept with hands.I am inclined towards GI because It balances my quench for procedures and be a good hospitalist at the same time.
Why did you choose UMKC, and what do you love about Kansas City? It was a no-brainer for me to rank UMKC as my top program. I chose UMKC for the people, 3 years is no short time and when you’re working, time flows super slow. Being surrounded by the right people makes the entire difference in your journey. Everyone here is very thoughtful, caring and accommodating. Virtual interviews made it hard and I visited Kansas City for the first time only after I matched. I fell in love with KC within the few days I got here. After a long day at work there is always something cool happening within a few miles. I love the fountains, parks and walking around in Plaza. You can still not give up the big city life and enjoy the small town feel here.
What are your interests? I love playing racquet sports a lot. Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Pickleball, Volleyball, Cricket. I enjoy running, listening to old music. I wouldn’t call it photography but I take good pictures with my phone. I’m a big foodie and eat to my heart’s content (then worry to my brain’s content). I love being around people, having a good time. Scouting out eateries/restaurants and then compelling my friends to try out is another hobby. 🙂

Bio: I am from New Delhi, India. I attended my medical school in New Delhi as well, and graduated in 2021. It’s been an exciting journey moving to Kansas City for my Internal Medicine residency training. In the long run, I am interested in academic medicine with an inclination towards Rheumatology.

I chose the UMKC family for the warmth and strong camaraderie among residents, and the immense support provided by the faculty. The diverse patient population with excellent clinical training was also one of the reasons that drew me to UMKC. Kansas City has an amazing vibe and lots of great food options, along with having all the big city amenities without the hassles. People here are friendly and it already feels like home.

Bio: I was born and raised in Ahmedabad, India and that’s where I did my Medical School. I pursued a Research Fellowship in GI Oncology at Mayo Clinic Florida. I am interested in pursuing a Hem/Onc Fellowship after IM Residency and my long term goal is to engage in clinical/translational research to enhance outcomes for cancer patients in addition to clinical practice.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?
UMKC because you get to work at two different hospitals which have a varied patient population. The residents and attendings are very supportive and empathetic. The hospital staff is very friendly and the overall atmosphere is collegial. Kansas City because it is indeed a big city (plenty of things to do) with a small town feel (people are hospitable, less congestion on roads). Plus I am a KC Chiefs fan and what better place to cheer for them than Kansas City itself.
What are your interests? I like to play outdoor sports like tennis and cricket and watch American Football. I like to travel and explore new places. Also, I am a Space enthusiast and it always fascinates me as to how everything came into being.

Bio: I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. I went to Rockhurst University for undergrad where I majored in Biochemistry and Spanish. After undergrad, I decided to make the big jump across the street to UMKC for medical school.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City?: As a UMKC student, I saw firsthand that the staff at both St. Luke’s and TMC/UH were deeply dedicated to the students, residents, and patients. Additionally, the cohesiveness among residents speaks volumes about the program. All of this combined with a diverse patient population will make us become more well-rounded clinicians who are both cognizant and responsive to the medical needs of the greater KC community. Some of the best things about KC include all the friendly people and the great food!

Molly O’Brien, D.O.
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
Bio: I was born and raised in KC, but decided to get out of town for my undergraduate degree. I attended the University of Nebraska Kearney as a DII Volleyball player and graduated with a BA in Chemistry with Spanish and Biology minors. Family is an extremely high priority for me so naturally I moved back to KC after graduating, and started medical school three years later. I do not plan on specializing after residency as my current plan is to become a Hospitalist.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? Kansas City chose me. After growing up here, I realized it was such a wonderful place to put down roots and raise a family. I love the affordable cost of living, while still getting the perks of big city life. AND the people here are the best. More specifically, I loved the atmosphere and patient diversity at UMKC. Every single person I interacted with on the interview trail had nothing but wonderful things to say about their co-residents, attendings, and overall support system at UMKC.

Michael Pavlisin, M.D.

Bio: I’m from St. Louis, MO, but moved to Kansas City in 2011 to attend the 6 Year BA/MD program. After graduating in 2017, I spent the next 5 years in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina as a Medical Officer in the United States Navy. I split time working as a Battalion Surgeon with the Marine Corps and as a General Medical Officer at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command – Charleston. During this time, I discovered my passion for medical education, which is where I hope to spend the rest of my medical career.
Why did you choose UMKC and what do you love about Kansas City? I fell in love with Kansas City while here for college and medical school; I also fell in love with a Kansas City girl who followed me in my journey with the Navy. After we welcomed our daughter in 2022, we were super excited to get the opportunity to come back home to our family and friends.
What are your interests? I love the Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues. I like doing some amateur woodworking and playing golf. As a family, we enjoy spending time on our family farm. Once upon a time I used to love playing sports, but now everything hurts.

I chose UMKC School of Medicine because it is a university program that provides strong training in an academic environment with opportunities to get vast clinical experience.
