The 11th Annual Western Michigan University Medical Humanities Conference will be held September 23–24, 2021. This gathering is convened yearly to discuss perspectives on the intersection of the humanities and health, including patient narratives, the history of medicine and health care, biomedical ethics, spirituality, arts and literature, and so on.
Due to ongoing uncertainty regarding the pandemic, vaccines, and university travel budgets, we will be hosting the meeting online through Microsoft Teams. We hope to return to a physical meeting in Kalamazoo next year.
While we invite submissions for individual paper presentations, we especially encourage and will give preference to panel submissions that bring together individuals from different backgrounds or academic areas to discuss a common question, theme, or issue. We are also happy to receive submissions in performance art—spoken word, poetry, acting, music, and so on—while keeping in mind the limitations of an online meeting.
Submission Guidelines: Submissions should include name, department/institutional affiliation, project title, and an abstract not to exceed 500 words. Proposals should be submitted by May 15 to email@example.com. Accepted presentations will be notified by June 1; conference registration will be required of all presenters. Graduate student submissions are eligible for the Shirley Bach Memorial Graduate Student Award. This award, as judged by the conference planning committee members, will be specially designated on the conference program. All single-author graduate student proposals are eligible— please indicate in the submission materials that you would like to be considered. We are committed to making the conference as accessible as possible. We invite accepted presenters to submit a separate document with your name and any access-related information you wish us to know. It will be shared solely with the organizers.
