Internal Medicine Programs

In their final year of medical school, students entering our program select one of the following residency program tracks, which will influence their curriculum and clinical experiences over the duration of their program. Explore these tracks to see which is right for you.

Internal medicine faculty and residents walk down a hospital hallway discussing patient care.

Categorical Internal Medicine Residency

Also known as our Internal Medicine Residency program, this three-year track provides residents with plentiful clinical opportunities, independence and mentorship as they gain exposure to core subspecialities, transition to supervisory roles, refine their clinical knowledge and skills, and prepare for the next step in their careers, whether in clinical practice or a fellowship.

Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency

This four-year "MedPeds" track sees residents transition between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics rotations every three months. Residents gain abundant experience at three clinical sites (University Health Truman Medical Center, Saint Luke's Hospital and Children's Mercy Hospital) and have ample elective opportunities, increasing their exposure to different areas and enhancing fellowship opportunities.

Preliminary Internal Medicine Track

This program closely mirrors the curriculum and clinical experiences of our first year categorical interns and allows residents to gain exposure to a variety of core subspecialties, critical care medicine and general medicine before moving on to a subsequent residency program in another area, such as ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology and more.
