About Us

Our History

The School of Medicine has long believed that a vibrant, inclusive, respectful and professional institutional climate is essential to medical education, the work environment and the ability to effectively deliver healthcare in diverse communities.

As such, the school established its first Office of Diversity in October 1980 and then continued that commitment in 2020 by creating a new Office of the Learning Environment, which focused on preventing and addressing mistreatment, promoting well-being, and upholding professionalism for all members of the medical school community.

Today, those two offices with related goals have come together to expand the support they provide and ensure that the students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff at the School of Medicine and its hospital affiliates feel safe, valued and represented.

Our Mission Statement

The Office of the Learning Environment is dedicated to cultivating a thriving and respectful atmosphere at the UMKC School of Medicine. We work to enhance the well-being of all community members by upholding professionalism, preventing and addressing mistreatment, and fostering a culture of mutual respect, collaboration and inclusiveness. We are committed to promoting positive interactions, facilitating open dialogue and ensuring that every individual feels supported and valued.
