Biography

Dr. Steve Simon is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Simon primarily focuses his courses on intermediate to advanced biostatistics methods, clinical research methodology, and an introduction to R, SAS, and SQL.

He is also an independent statistical consultant through P.Mean Consulting, offering expertise in study design, sample size justification, research ethics, data analysis, and the preparation of research presentations and publications. He is the author of P.Mean and provides free newsletters and monthly webinars on statistics, research methodology, research ethics, and evidence-based medicine.

Previously, Dr. Simon served as a Research Biostatistician at Children’s Mercy Hospital, where he held a joint appointment as Associate Professor (later Full Professor) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He provided consultation on protocol design, data analysis, grant development, and research training for clinical, basic, and behavioral studies. Prior roles include Chief of the Statistics Activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research at Bowling Green State University.

Dr. Simon has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and supported 19 separate research grants. His research specializes in the study of the research process itself, including patient accrual, data sharing, and the ethical conduct of clinical and biomedical research.

 

Dr. Simon earned his Ph.D. in Statistics, an M.S. in Statistics, and a B.A. in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Iowa. His expertise spans statistical consulting, biostatistics, clinical research methodology, and the application of statistical software for biomedical research.
