Biography

Dr. Shaffer has practiced family medicine since completing residency at UMKCSOM/UHLMC in 1995. He is a professor of family medicine with the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine and served as the family medicine residency program director from 2002 to 2017. Most recently, he served in leadership as Chief of Inpatient Medicine and EICU director for University Health Lakewood Medical Center while providing obstetrical care and advanced women’s care procedures. He transitioned to prn status with the department in 2024 focusing serving on the teaching service for Inpatient care, outpatient procedures and medical student didactics.

A member of the AAFP since 1992, Shaffer has served as a member of several commissions including the Commission on Finance and the Commission on Continuing Professional Development. He served seven years on the Association of Family Medicine Residency Board of Directors, serving as its president in 2015 and then chair of the Council of Academic Medicine in 2016. At the state level, Shaffer has served the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians in various leadership roles including chapter vice president, president and board chair, and chairman of the Commission on Education for many years and as a Missouri delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates.

Shaffer served as national campaign advisor and speaker for the Health is Primary campaign, part of Family Medicine for America’s Health, and served four years as a member of the AAFP’s Working Party. His mission is to expand the scope of family medicine residents and practicing family physicians for the future ultimate generalist physician meeting the needs of their communities.

He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has earned the AAFP Degree of Fellow and is a fellow in the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. Additionally he has earned an MBA from Rockhurst University.

In his spare time, Dr. Shaffer enjoys of outdoor activities: hiking, boating, snow/water skiing and wake surfing.
