Biography

Dr. Balk was born in Columbia, MO but raised in Council Bluffs, IA. He attended undergraduate at the University of Kansas and then medical school at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, OH. Seeking a new experience, he went on to residency at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. It was during his intern year that he realized his passion for and potential of the use of Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at NY Methodist and stayed on as both clinical and Ultrasound faculty eventually becoming the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Director. After almost a decade in Brooklyn, Dr. Balk returned to the Midwest to join the faculty of University Health Truman Medical Center and is excited to help further the world of Point of Care Ultrasound to both Truman and UMKC.

In addition to his passion for Point of Care Ultrasound and teaching, he is a diehard Jayhawks, Chiefs, Sporting KC, and Arsenal fan. He also loves traveling anywhere there’s a beach and scuba diving.
