Biography

Supporting Diverse Students at UMKC
As Education Team Coordinator at the UMKC School of Medicine, I mentor and advise students from a wide range of cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Many are navigating the unique challenges of medical education as first-generation college students or as members of underrepresented groups in healthcare. My role often involves not only academic planning but also helping students access wellness resources, build resilience, and develop a sense of belonging within the program.

Creating Inclusive Practices
I intentionally adopt advising practices that are culturally responsive and student-centered. This includes active listening, validating student experiences, and ensuring that communication is clear and accessible. I incorporate strategies from my research on stress management to help students develop coping skills, and I remain attentive to the systemic barriers that can affect persistence and achievement for marginalized students.

Research and DEI Commitment
My doctoral dissertation focused on the relationship between stress management strategies and the academic success of diverse high school students. This research underscored the importance of addressing inequities in access to mental health and wellness resources — insights that continue to guide my advising practices at UMKC. I remain committed to applying evidence-based strategies to support students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education.

Vision at UMKC
As Senior Academic Advisor, I will continue to advance UMKC’s mission by providing equitable, student-centered advising that supports both academic and personal success. I am dedicated to fostering an environment where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to pursue their goals, and where diversity is not only acknowledged but celebrated as essential to the strength of the academic community.
