What do you like about Kansas City?

The Kansas City community is truly unmatched! I grew up in the mid-Missouri area my whole life so when I came here, I was worried about losing my sense of home. Although Kansas City is a very diverse community, they all have one thing in common: inclusion. Everyone is committed to your success and growth as an individual just as much as you are, making you feel right at home as soon as you’re here. The barbecue and food options here don’t hurt, either.

Why did you choose UMKC’s School of Medicine?

UMKC’s School of Medicine fosters a place where I can truly serve the underserved. They offer clinical placements with some of Kansas City’s most in need patients. These experiences illuminate the profound influence of social determinants on health outcomes and enrich your role as a healthcare provider by highlighting the impacts our profession can have on individuals’ lives.

What has been your most rewarding experience as a PA student thus far, and how has it shaped your journey in medicine?

My most rewarding experience as a PA student has been the privilege of serving underserved populations during my clinical rotations. Witnessing the impact of healthcare disparities firsthand has reinforced my commitment to addressing inequities in access to care and providing compassionate, comprehensive healthcare to those in need.

How do you see the School of Medicine supporting your future goals in the world of medicine?

My diverse array of clinical experiences in the Kansas City area has equipped me with the essential tools to serve my future patients with compassion and dedication. These rotations have deepened my awareness of the social determinants of health, enabling me to approach patient care with a holistic understanding and a commitment to promoting healthy lives for all.

A final piece of advice I have for prospective students is…

Embrace the journey of learning rather than fixating on perfection; each experience, success, and setback is an opportunity for you to become the PA you were meant to be. Lastly, during challenging days, always remember the purpose behind your decision to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant; remembering your intrinsic motivations can provide the resilience needed to navigate through every obstacle and uncertainty.
