About

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine has provided comprehensive simulation-based education for health professions students, residents and faculty for more than a decade. Known for its innovative and integrated curriculum, the School of Medicine emphasizes early and longitudinal clinical exposure, making simulation a foundational component of its educational mission.

Simulation education at UMKC is delivered through a coordinated, centrally managed simulation enterprise that spans multiple facilities and campuses. These sites together serve as the primary hub for undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, procedural skills training, high-fidelity simulation, simulation-based assessment and research, and faculty development.

Within the UMKC School of Medicine-St. Joseph campus Medical Education Building, a dedicated simulation and skills laboratory space supports regional learners and aligns with the School of Medicine’s mission of preparing our graduates to serve rural Missouri communities.

Across all sites, simulation activities are supported by a centralized operational team responsible for curriculum support, space and resource management, standardized patient operations, quality improvement, and faculty development. The School of Medicine’s robust Standardized Patient (SP) Program is embedded within this enterprise and serves all UMKC health professions programs, as well as regional hospitals, universities and external partners.

As UMKC’s simulation infrastructure continues to grow in scope, scale and geographic footprint, the simulation enterprise remains strategically aligned with the School of Medicine’s vision and mission.

Vision

The UMKC Clinical Training Facility will be a leader in simulation-based health professions innovation, collaboration, education, and educational research for the University of Missouri-Kansas City, local community, and within the region.

Mission

The mission of the UMKC School of Medicine Clinical Training Facility (CTF) is to provide innovative, educational simulation programs and opportunities based on sound methodologies to support the education of trainees, healthcare providers and serve the surrounding community.  The CTF will serve as a vital adjunct to healthcare education by encouraging hands-on, situational learning in a supportive and formative environment, developing individual and team-based competencies, and fostering interprofessional collaboration.  Education and research opportunities provided by the CTF will improve medical education and patient care, and ultimately advance the health of the surrounding community.

Values

These six values describe the Healthcare Simulationist Code of Ethics (CoE) as published by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and adopted by our simulation program.

Integrity

Healthcare Simulationists shall maintain the highest standards of integrity including honesty, truthfulness, fairness, and judgment in all matters affecting their duties.

Transparency

Healthcare Simulationists shall perform all healthcare simulation activities in a manner that promotes transparency and clarity in the design, communication, and decision-making processes.

Mutual Respect

Healthcare Simulationists shall respect the rights, dignity, and worth of all. They shall practice empathy and compassion to support beneficence and non-maleficence towards all involved in simulation activities.

Professionalism

Healthcare Simulationists shall conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the professional standards inherent in healthcare simulation.

Accountability

Healthcare Simulationists shall be accountable for their decisions and actions in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.

Results Orientation

Healthcare Simulationists shall serve to support activities that enhance the quality of the profession and healthcare systems. Outcomes are inclusive of all parts of the process of healthcare simulation and are not exclusive to a final product.
