Curriculum and core competencies

Our curriculum, which is designed and managed by the Council on Curriculum, leverages patient, peer and faculty interactions in clinical settings to foster passionate, empathetic future healthcare professionals. We use core competencies as the foundation for all educational experiences and the selection of new students. The Council on Evaluation assesses the academic and professional development of students as they move through the curriculum.

Early admissions and transfer students

There are a couple alterative paths into the M.D. program. Those in their sophomore or junior year of college for their baccalaureate degree at one of the accepted universities may be eligible for the early and guaranteed admission into the Medical Scholars program. Alternatively, in the transfer program, if students meet the requirements, they may be considered for transfer admission with advanced standing for the fifth year of the six-year program if openings are available.

Study Rural Medicine in St. Joseph

Our nation is facing a drastic shortage of rural and small-town physicians. Our M.D. program has partnered with Mosaic Life Care, a leading provider of rural medical care, to create a program designed to address this shortage and train the next generation of highly qualified, highly capable community practitioners.

What Our Students are Saying

UMKC School of Medicine has a docent program that puts students in the clinic early on in medical school. I find it really rewarding to follow up on patients I have seen before and talk with them about their lives. A lot of those patients will ask how we are doing in school too, so it feels like that patient-physician relationship starts early and helps us get feedback from people that are more comfortable around us.

Emma Helm

Emma's experience

I believe UMKC excels in its clinical education. Specifically, some things that made the school stand out are docent units and the additional internal medicine rotations. The docent unit allows you to get early clinical experience, have a student and a physician mentor, and gives you a reliable community that can help you excel throughout medical school.
