Medical Scholars

The UMKC School of Medicine offers a Medical Scholars program that would offer early and guaranteed admission to college students interested in applying to our medical school. The Medical Scholars program is a pathway into the M.D. program, which accepts students who have earned, or will soon earn, a baccalaureate degree.

Applicants for the Medical Scholars program are students currently in their sophomore or junior year of college and who attend the following universities:

  • UMKC
  • Avila University
  • Drury University
  • Missouri University of Science and Technology
  • Missouri Western State University
  • Park University
  • Rockhurst University
  • Truman State University
  • University of Missouri – St. Louis
  • William Jewell College
  • Lincoln University
  • University of Illinois – Chicago
  • Northwest Missouri State University
  • University of Missouri – Columbia

An application will NOT be reviewed until all supporting documents have been received. When all application materials have been received, the Council on Selection in the School of Medicine will review all complete applications. All application materials must be postmarked by Aug.1.

Students applying for admission to the Medical Scholars program must email the School of Medicine the following documents:

  • Medical Scholars Program Application (available her on May 1)
  • Official college transcripts
  • College transcript displaying grades through the point of application. An unofficial transcript is acceptable for application purposes. An official transcript will be required prior to matriculation if offered early admission.
  • Personal statement or essay addressing the following: What has motivated you to study medicine? Why are you interested in the UMKC Medical Scholars program?
  • Résumé or CV highlighting specific health care experiences.
  • A minumum of three letters of recommendation, including at least one from a faculty member (professor).

After the review of all complete applications by the Council on Selection in the School of Medicine, candidates will be selected for a virtual interview.

After all applicants invited have been interviewed, the Council on Selection will extend offers of guaranteed admission to those candidates who best qualify for the Medical Scholars Program. Applicants will be notified via email of the decision.
