Faculty Professional Development Sessions

Sessions will be updated as opportunities are finalized.

More opportunities and resources can be found through the Office of Professional Development. Some resources on this page and elsewhere on the site require you to log in with your UM System single sign on account (SSO). If you have trouble accessing any materials, please reach out to Elle Jorgensen.

Leadership Book Club

Leadership Book Club occurs on the third Tuesday of the month at noon. The first session occurs on Aug. 20.

The Office of Professional Development requires registration for each book as the office will pay and order the book for the first 15 faculty registrants. If you register after the first 15, you will be responsible for getting your own book (affordable cost is a consideration in book selection). When the Office pays for your book, attendance is expected.

Please register for the session even if you don’t need a copy of the book so we know how many to expect.

Medical Education Research and Innovation Team

This newly formed interest group engages faculty to collaborate on specific medical education research/innovation projects to further scholarly work. Additional educational opportunities will be announced, including an opportunity to present medical education peer-reviewed research at the annual Louise E. Arnold Ph.D. Medical Education Research and Innovation workshop.

Contact Jennifer Quaintance, Ph.D. or Christine Sullivan, M.D. for more information.

Faculty Scholars Program

Look this summer for an announcement to apply for the Faculty Scholars Program (a collaboration with the DEI Office and the Collaborative Committee for Faculty Success). This is a longitudinal program ideal for faculty who are planning on going up for promotion in the next 1-3 years. Scholars can be physician or non-physician UMKC faculty that are in non-tenure track. The program provides guidance about the promotion process/qualifications and extensive feedback for scholars with their CV, identifying activities to include in the promotion scholarly tracks, drafting a self-assessment narrative, and completing a draft promotion packet.

Didactic sessions occur in the early evening (dates determined by the scholars and facilitators) from October till May-June.

Longitudinal Mentoring Program

A successful program pairing faculty with trained, volunteer faculty mentors. Look for an announcement to apply soon. Mentees and mentors are paired through an application process for “fit” based on promotion scholarly track (teaching, service, clinical practice, research) interests. Mentees can be at any stage in their academic career. Mentors are not from the same academic department as the faculty member offering a fresh perspective. Mentees most often join the program for guidance for promotion, to build opportunities for collaboration, and for research and funding advice. Most mentee-mentor pairings continue in a longitudinal fashion while some conclude after attaining a specific goal.

One-time Career Counseling

This opportunity is open all year and allows faculty to meet with the Associate Dean for Professional Development where they receive a one-on-one, one-time advice during a coaching session. A brief application is required prior to scheduling your 1-2 hour session to ensure your specific needs are addressed.  Most frequently, faculty seek promotion guidance and career progression advice.
