Faculty Professional Development Sessions
Sessions will be updated as opportunities are finalized.
More opportunities and resources can be found through the Office of Professional Development. Some resources on this page and elsewhere on the site require you to log in with your UM System single sign on account (SSO). If you have trouble accessing any materials, please reach out to Elle Jorgensen.
Leadership Book Club
Session dates: Third Tuesday of the month at noon starting in August each year.
Registration required: Listserv announcements are sent out well in advance of each book.
The first session occurs on Aug. 19. You can participate in-person at the SoM or virtually.
The Office of Professional Development requires registration for each book as the office will pay and order the book for the first 15 faculty registrants. If you register after the first 15, you will be responsible for getting your own book (affordable cost is a consideration in book selection). When the Office pays for your book, attendance is expected.
Please register for the session even if you don’t need a copy of the book so we know how many to expect.

Faculty Scholars Program
Dates: This program meets from October through May annually
Application required: Announcement on listserv early summer annually
Look this summer for an announcement to apply for the Faculty Scholars Program. This is a longitudinal program ideal for faculty who are planning on going up for promotion in the next 1-3 years. Scholars can be physician or non-physician UMKC faculty that are in non-tenure track. The program provides guidance about the promotion process/qualifications and extensive feedback for scholars with their CV, identifying activities to include in the promotion scholarly tracks, drafting a self-assessment narrative, and completing a draft promotion packet. All faculty that completed the program (initiated in 2019) who have applied for promotion have been successful!

Longitudinal Mentoring Program
Dates: Enrollment annually in summer
Application required: Announcement on listserv in summer annually
A successful program pairing faculty with trained, volunteer faculty mentors. Look for an announcement to apply soon. Mentees and mentors are paired through an application process for “fit” based on promotion scholarly track (teaching, service, clinical practice, research) interests. Mentees can be at any stage in their academic career. Mentors are not from the same academic department as the faculty member allowing a fresh perspective. Mentees most often join the program for guidance for promotion, to build opportunities for collaboration, and for research and funding advice. Most mentee-mentor pairings continue in a longitudinal fashion while some conclude after attaining a specific goal.
