Welcome
Welcome to the UMKC Internal Medicine Residency Program website. We are extremely proud of our academic program, which provides outstanding clinical training with many opportunities for research. We have more than 175 dedicated, full-time and community-based volunteer faculty training our residents at our two affiliate hospitals.
University Health Truman Medical Center is Kansas City’s urban safety net hospital, which was named by the University Health System Consortium (UHC) as one of the nation’s top 5 teaching hospitals in quality, alongside the Mayo Clinic Hospital and the Brigham in Boston. Saint Luke’s Hospital is a quaternary referral center, nationally recognized for treatment of cardiovascular disease, the regional leader in stroke care, and the first hospital in the United States recognized with the Malcolm Baldrige Award for Healthcare Quality. Splitting time between these two hospitals, residents are exposed to an unbeatable spectrum of patients and an outstanding array of generalists and subspecialists.
Kansas City is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. A big city with a small-town feel, our residents are regularly checking out Kansas City’s professional sports teams, including the 2015 World Champion Kansas City Royals, 2013 MLS champion Sporting KC, and, of course, the 2020, 2022 and 2023 Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Beyond sports, KC is home to top museums, nightlife in the Power & Light district, and more than 100 miles of natural-surface trails across the region for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Of course, KC is world-famous for its jazz and barbeque – just ask any local for their favorite hangouts.
Our program is dynamic and diverse – large enough to provide a wide variety of experiences but small enough that every one of our residents can get involved and make a difference. We have a heavy emphasis and strive to develop the full potential of each individual resident within the broad array of Internal Medicine. Whether your interest is in primary care, hospital medicine, or an internal medicine subspecialty, explore our website and consider applying to our program. We are confident you will be impressed with the opportunities.
