Medical School: University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine

Bio: Caroline Ramsey is a Kansas City native, and is so excited to be staying here for residency. She grew up north of the river and attended St. Pius X High School, where she met her husband, Ben. During high school, her grandmother, Carolyn, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and came to live with Caroline’s family. Caroline would rush home from school every afternoon to share news from the day and watch the Royals on their path to the 2015 World Series. Helping to care for her grandmother in her last year of life solidified Caroline’s love for medicine.

In 2017, Caroline began school at the UMKC School of Medicine, where she was fortunate to have many wonderful mentors that ultimately furthered her interest in Internal Medicine. In April 2024 she and her husband Ben welcomed their son into their family. Caroline is honored to be a part of the UMKC Internal Medicine family, and can’t wait to see what the next 3 years bring!

Why did you choose UMKC? In my training at UMKC School of Medicine, I encountered many graduates of the program, as well as current residents. Why did you choose UMKC? I chose UMKC because of its strong reputation and the great feedback I heard from alumni and current residents. Everyone spoke highly of the training, mentorship, and supportive environment. During my time in the U.S., the Midwest felt the most like home to me. Medical School: Nilratan Sircar Medical College

Bio: Hi, I am Suryasnata and I go by Silvy. I was born and raised in Kolkata, India, where I also completed my medical degree. I am excited to begin my journey at UMKC and take the next step towards becoming a compassionate and capable physician dedicated to helping others!

Why did you choose UMKC? I was looking for a program that would offer both rigorous clinical training and a sense of purpose. UMKC offers exactly that, all within a collaborative environment grounded in support and camaraderie. Splitting time between Truman and Saint Luke’s Hospital offers the best of both worlds: exposure to resource-rich care and the chance to serve communities often deprived of regular healthcare.  I was also looking to further my interests in Cardiology, so the opportunity to train at Saint Luke’s, a nationally recognized leader in cardiovascular care, made UMKC the perfect fit for me!

What are your interests? I love teaching and expressing myself through writing, especially stream-of-consciousness pieces and poetry, which I share on my blog. Dance is another passion, whether it’s classical, oriental, or even pole dancing! Lately, I’ve been exploring pottery and have started building a small collection of handmade ceramic pieces at home. I also enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, especially by adding Bengali twists to Western recipes.

Juan Gabriel Calderón
Juan Gabriel Calderón, M.D.

Medical School: University of Missouri – Kansas City

Bio: I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue my medical training in the city I love most—Kansas City—at UMKC. I was born and raised in the urban core of Kansas City, Missouri, by a low-income, working-class family. I graduated from Lincoln College Preparatory Academy in the Kansas City Public Schools system and recently completed UMKC’s combined BA/MD program. I am a first-generation Mexican-American, the oldest of five siblings, and the first in my family to attend college and medical school. I am also proud to be part of the final cohort of the Kauffman Scholars program, a multi-decade initiative that supported students from under-resourced communities in Kansas City.

Why did you choose UMKC? Giving back to the community I come from has always been a central motivation in my journey through medicine. I’m deeply committed to mentoring and advocating for Kansas City students from under-resourced backgrounds, particularly those in the urban core, to pursue careers in medicine. I remain actively involved in local Latino organizations—both medical and non-medical—and find purpose in staying connected to my roots. I’m especially drawn to hospitalist and critical care medicine and am exploring subspecialty pathways that keep me closely involved in the wards and the ICU.

What are your interests? I’m a big fan of computers and technology. I started coding in high school after a math teacher encouraged me to take an online course, and it’s been a passion ever since. With the rise of AI, programming has become even more accessible and exciting to me. I also played American football in high school and still enjoy staying active through sports. And I absolutely love Mexican food!

Where do you live? I grew up in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast neighborhood, near Independence Avenue (not to be confused with North Kansas City). While in medical school, I lived in UMKC student housing, and after graduating, I moved to the Union Hill neighborhood to remain close to the hospital. I enjoy the mix of student and non-student residents, and my apartment has a great gym—which is a plus!

Bio: Hi! My name is Ashelyn Green, and I’m so excited to be joining the UMKC IM residency family! I grew up in Central Texas and completed my medical education at Des Moines University. I’m currently pursuing a preliminary year in internal medicine at UMKC before transitioning into anesthesia.

Outside of medicine, I love reading romance novels and exploring new places. I’m also passionate about mentoring and giving back to the next generation of future doctors.
I’m looking forward to learning from and contributing to this amazing team — and to growing both professionally and personally over the next few years. Can’t wait to meet everyone and get started!

Why did you choose UMKC? I chose UMKC because during my interview, the faculty and attendings were so kind and caring about my future goals. It was one of the few interviews that felt like catching up with old friends.

What are your interests? Archery, knitting, crochet, and reading romance novels. I am a huge basketball fan and love the Boston Celtics. I am a huge fan of college sports and support my alma mater, Baylor University.

Where do you live? I'm in North Kansas City and I am currently exploring my new neighborhood.

Medical School: Baylor College of Medicine

Why did you choose UMKC? I chose UMKC for the city--not too big and not too small. It has everything I would want and also provides a suburban life close to the hospitals where we rotate. The program is also amazing, and provides exposure to (a) the entire length of disease processes and (b) a diverse patient population. The people I have met so far are amazing and continue to demonstrate the supportive nature of the program!

Where do you live? Roeland Park

Medical School: University of MO - Columbia

Bio:I was born in India and raised in the Chicago suburbs. I attended undergrad at University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and moved to Missouri for medical school at University of Missouri-Columbia. I am thrilled to be staying close to home, but moving out of the small town of Columbia, into a mini Chicago like Kansas City!

Why did you choose UMKC? I feel blessed to match into such an amazing program. UMKC is very well-rounded, and I felt very supported and heard by the faculty throughout the interview process. I am excited to spend the next four years surrounded by some of the nicest faculty and people around.

What are your interests? I love working out and exploring different realms of fitness. For example, I used to hate running but spontaneously decided to train for a half marathon my third year of med school and did it! I also enjoy cooking new recipes and trying new restaurants with my husband. I’m excited about the food scene in KC and can’t wait to try everything!

Where do you live? My husband and I live in a high-rise in the financial and library district downtown. We are new to KC and ended up loving the downtown area. We wanted to be on the quieter side, but are only two blocks away from Power & Light so we get the best of both worlds. Most importantly, we are close enough to all the hospitals which is great!

Medical School: University of South Dakota

Bio: I grew up in Beresford, SD, a town of only 2,000 people. I stayed in-state for undergrad at SDSU where I met my husband Nate! Before starting medical school, I worked as an ophthalmic technician at Vance Thompson Vision where I fell in love with the field of ophthalmology. I completed medical school at University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Our daughter, Anne, was born a year ago, and we have been enjoying adventures with her! I am excited to continue my medical training at UMKC and look forward to the many memories I will make in KC!

Why did you choose UMKC? I chose UMKC after the great experience I had rotating here during medical school. The people are so welcoming, and I had a wonderful time learning from the excellent faculty! Kansas City is also not too far from my home state, so it still feels like home!

What are your interests? Painting landscapes, hiking in national parks, playing board games, and spending time with family.

Where do you live? Lenexa - We enjoy the quiet neighborhood and the local parks!
