Center for Behavioral Medicine
The Center for Behavioral Medicine (CBM) is a 65-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital, nestled on the iconic Hospital Hill in downtown Kansas City. Operated by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, they offer compassionate, evidence-based care to all individuals who are in need of competency restoration and aggressive inpatient treatment, and who qualify for services according to the Revised Statues of Missouri (RsMo). The mission of CBM is to deliver quality psychiatric hospital and community based services in a safe environment that provides the support and skills needed for individuals to achieve their highest potential. CBM also operates several group homes for the care of mentally ill patients and has a forensic mobile team unit to cater to the need of patients in the correctional facilities and community.
The center also serves as the main hub for the psychiatry residency program at UMKC, providing top-notch education to future psychiatrists. The hospital is one of the core sites for psychiatry clerkship rotations for UMKC B.A./M.D. students, and also hosts a psychology training program and a pharmacy residency training program.
Future construction
Missouri lawmakers have approved $300 million to build a new psychiatric hospital near the current CBM building with a projected completion date of 2027. The plan is to include 100 new beds for CBM (for competency restoration) and 100 new beds for University Health (for civil commitment and short-term stabilization). They also plan to open a separate psychiatric emergency services.
