Docents and Clerkships
The division of medical student education within UMKC ‘s Department of Community and Family Medicine focuses on several student clinical rotations during the School of Medicine’s six-year curriculum.
Year 1 and Year 2 hospital-based experiences are supervised by UMKC Family Medicine faculty and administration.
Year 1 Rotations
We offer required rotations that introduce students to pre-clerkship clinical medicine in a family medicine environment.
Year 2 Rotation
In Year 2, we offer another required rotation that further expands pre-clerkship clinical experiences in a Family Medicine environment.
Docent Faculty
Year 1 and Year 2 docent groups are supervised by practicing UMKC Family Medicine faculty, including:

Year 4 Clerkship
The Family Medicine Clerkship is a required four-week clinical rotation for fourth-year medical students at UMKC. Students will be exposed to the concept of primary care and the unique relationship that exists between patients and their family physician. Students will be exposed to the full-scope of family medicine, from the beginning of life to end of life in a community-based hospital and clinical setting. In addition, students will attend didactic teaching sessions, which will present core concepts of family medicine and introduce them to important topics, such as population health and lifestyle medicine. Learning will be re-enforced through the a wide variety of clinical experiences, including but not limited to:
- Routine health maintenance exams for children and adults
- Evidence-based preventive medicine
- Acute care visits
- Prenatal care
- Inpatient medicine
- Labor and delivery
- Sports medicine
- Office-based procedure
- Chronic medical condition
