University Health Truman Medical Center (UHTMC)
University Health (formerly Truman Medical Center) is the primary site for the UMKC residency. It is an academic medical center and a critical access hospital that serves all members of the Kansas City community regardless of ability to pay. Staff are committed to the principle that everyone deserves access to quality medical services, and as a result, provide inclusive, compassionate and comprehensive care to all patients. The downtown site is designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of surgeons and has a high volume of orthopedic trauma. The orthopedic faculty prioritizes resident education and fosters an environment of continuous learning and professional growth through hands-on training, mentorship and our educational curriculum. Six orthopedic residents are assigned to UHTMC at all times.
Children's Mercy Hospital — Kansas City
Children’s Mercy Hospital is a leading pediatric hospital in Kansas City that serves the community and surrounding region with pediatric specialty care. Children's Mercy has the distinction of being named a Level 1 Children's Surgery Center as well as Level 1 Trauma Center. The Department of Pediatric Orthopedics at Children's Mercy is committed to providing excellent surgical and nonsurgical care to our patients, as well as educating the next generation of orthopedic surgeons. Residents who rotate at our hospital will receive education on wide spectrum of conditions in the field of pediatric orthopedics as part of their clinical assignments and during faculty-led didactics. In addition, the Department of Orthopedics is engaged in cutting-edge research projects to further our knowledge and improve patient care. Orthopedic residents are encouraged to collaborate with our faculty on research projects throughout their residents. Three to four UMKC orthopedic residents rotate here at the same time.
Saint Luke's Hospital
Saint Luke's is a private hospital that provides much of the subspecialty training in our program. It is a major hospital in the city, featuring 490 beds and an internationally known Cardiovascular department. The Orthopaedic department has 14 clinical staff who are predominately associated with the Dickson-Diveley Midwest Orthopaedic Clinic. This clinic has a long history in Kansas City. Dr. Dickson and Diveley were both presidents of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and were the original founders of this training program. Learn more about the history of our department.
