Reason I came to UMKC: During the reception the night before interviews, I immediately felt that this was a place I want to be. The residents were so welcoming and seemed to be very close with each other. During interviews, there was a family atmosphere where everyone has each other’s backs and everyone is willing to work hard for each other to achieve a common goal.

Reason I came to UMKC: I am from the East coast but was excited for a change of scenery and chance to be in the Midwest. I had a great time at my pre-interview dinner and on interview day I felt a true sense of comradery among the residents. I’m excited to be a part of the UMKC family and experience all that Kansas City has to offer.

Reason I came to UMKC: I was able to see firsthand the culture of this program and the training its residents receive as a UMKC med student. Through my interactions with the residents while completing rotations on surgical services, I knew these were people who I wanted not only to be co-residents with, but also friends with. Kansas City is also home to me and I know that having my family, boyfriend and high school friends close by throughout residency will prove invaluable.

Why I came to UMKC: It seems like I am making my way west across the State of Missouri! Over the nine years leading up to residency, I completed my undergraduate and medical school education in St. Louis, completed a year as a preliminary general surgery resident at Mizzou in Columbia, and am now Kansas City to finish my general surgery training! I was immediately drawn to the broad-based training that UMKC offers. It was obvious how well the program prepares its residents for the future, no matter what specialty they choose. And when I met the residents, I could tell that they truly enjoyed working with each other. My goals for surgical training were to become a well-rounded surgeon and to be surrounded by hardworking co-residents who encourage me to do my best, so UMKC was the perfect fit for me.

Why I came to UMKC: I completed my first two years of general surgery residency at UMKC after falling in love with this program as a medical student. I knew I wanted a program that provided good operative exposure and was close to home, it was the best of both worlds. I spent three years completing my surgical oncology research fellowship at the NCI/NIH. I came back to complete the rest of my training at UMKC because I was looking for a program in which residents work at a safety net hospital, have a robust case load and a nice mix of open, laparoscopic, and robotic cases.

Why I came to UMKC: After immigrating from China to the United States, I transitioned from a concert pianist, holding a Master of Music, to pursuing my passion for medicine. Teaching piano for four years was a rewarding experience, but my family’s experiences with transplant surgery ultimately inspired me to step into the operating room. Drawn to Kansas City for its dynamic medical community and vibrant electronic dance music scene, I’ve found a unique balance between my professional and personal passions.
