EMS Instructor

Program Description

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor program introduces participants to the methods and techniques needed to provide initial and continuing EMS education. This program is considered entry-level for those entering EMS education as instructors, and is based upon the 2002 U.S. Department of Transportation curriculum for EMS Instructors. This course meets the 40-hour instructor course requirement for EMS educators. There is a mandatory online component that requires work prior to, and between, course sessions.

The EMS Instructor program is offered once annually in the fall, based upon demand.

Registration Requirements

Participants in the EMS Instructor program must:

  • Be currently licensed as an EMT, AEMT or paramedic in Missouri or another state, or be nationally registered at one of those levels.
  • Have at least two years of clinical experience and certification as an instructor in at least one of the following: BLS, ACLS, PHTLS, ITLS, PALS or PEPP.
  • Or be a registered nurse or physician with at least two years of clinical experience.

State Approval

This program meets the requirements for the 40-hour instructor-training course in Missouri. Other states may have different requirements. Interested persons from outside of Missouri should check with their home EMS office before registering to confirm this course will be accepted.
