Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Curriculum


Objective:

The acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical competence that is necessary to perform as a consultant and clinical care provider in the fields of hematology and oncology.

Methods:

  1. Clinical experiences which allow for the observation and management of both inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of blood and neoplastic disorders.
  2. Clinical and non-clinical experiences which expose the fellow to those areas of expertise significantly impacting upon the care of patients with blood and neoplastic disorders.
  3. An emphasis on continuing scholarship in the fields of hematology and oncology.
  4. Regular and consistent performance evaluation feedback.


Curriculum Outline:

The fellows have extensive exposure to a wide array of clinical problems throughout the three years of their training. In addition, they work closely with UMKC residents and medical students and have many opportunities to develop their teaching skills.

Year 1

Inpatient Hematology/Oncology at UH TMC — 4 months
Inpatient Hematology/Oncology at SLH  4 months
Hematopathology/Coagulation at UH TMC  1 month
Palliative Care at UH TMC  1 month
Chemotherapy Administration at UH TMC  1 month
Head and Neck Oncology at UH TMC  1 month
Hematology/Oncology Clinic at UH TMC  2 half days/week

Year 2

Inpatient Hematology/Oncology at UH TMC  3 months
Inpatient Hematology/Oncology at SLH  3 months
Bone Marrow Transplantation  1 months
Radiation Oncology at SLH  1 month
Gynecologic Oncology at UH TMC  1 month
Clinical Electives/Research  3 months
Hematology/Oncology Clinic at UH TMC  2 half days/week

Year 3

Inpatient Hematology/Oncology at UH TMC  2 months
Inpatient Hematology/Oncology at SLH  1 month
Breast Clinic at SLH  1 month
Thoracic Clinic at SLH  1 month
GI Clinic at SLH  1 month
Research  6 months
Hematology/Oncology Clinic at UH TMC  2 half days/week

Conferences:

A variety of weekly didactic conferences are available to further expand the fellow’s knowledge base.

  1. Core curriculum conference  Wednesday, 8 a.m.
  2. Research conference  fourth Friday, even months, 8 a.m.
  3. Journal Club  second Friday, 8 a.m.
  4. Tumor Conferences  Weekly
  5. Biostatistics Course  Weekly, Sept., and Oct

Faculty

The fellows work closely with core faculty members in the Section of Hematology/Oncology at University Health Truman Medical Center as well as Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kanas City. They also have frequent contact with the faculty in Radiation Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, and the surgical subspecialties.

Research interests include hemostasis, thrombosis, hemoglobinopathies, cancer in underserved and minority population, thoracic oncology, GI oncology, breast oncology as well as supportive and palliative care in oncology.
