Director's Welcome

Welcome,

Thank you for your interest in the UMKC hematology and oncology fellowship program.

A  geriatric faculty in my internal medicine residency once said  – “internal medicine is the compassionate and compulsive care of the complex patient”.
We  take the principles  of medicine a step further here at the UMKC hematology and oncology fellowship program.

Our fellows forge lifelong connections with their patients. They are the primary hematology and oncology physician for their patients during the three years of continuity clinic at University Health Truman Medical Center – Kansas City’s essential hospital.  They celebrate each milestone with patients and help them to cope with their hurdles and provide comfort. The continuity clinic for fellows has been the most valued asset for the program as they see a diverse range of general hematology and oncology problems that mirrors the Kansas City community/region.

We are the location for the Kansas City Regional Hemophilia Treatment Center as well as University Health Sickle Cell Comprehensive clinic. Fellows get strong clinical training in benign hematology and can pursue research interest in hemostasis, thrombosis and hemoglobinopathies.

We also have clinical trials through Midwest Cancer Alliance Network. Fellows with interest in clinical research could work with faculties  in breast, thoracic and GI oncology at UH TMC and St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City.  St. Luke’s Cancer institute also houses the Koontz Center for Advanced breast cancer – a comprehensive center dedicated to personalized care of patients with advanced breast cancer. Our fellows get their oncology sup specialty rotations at St. Luke’s cancer institute.

If you are dedicated to giving quality and compassionate care to your patient, UMKC is the program you should seriously consider for your training!

Sincerely,

Anuj Shrestha, MD, FACP
