Frequently Asked Questions

Your application, USMLE or COMLEX scores, Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE), letters of reference, and medical school transcript must be submitted via ERAS before a decision regarding an interview can be made. We use Interview Broker for invitations and scheduling.
Our program conducts all interviews virtually using the ZOOM platform.

As an applicant, you can expect to do the following:

  • Meet and hear from the program director
  • Have interviews with several faculty and residents
  • Attend a virtual lunch question and answer session with several residents
  • Gain access to a virtual tour and other information about the residency
  • Be interviewed by the program director, either an associate or assistant program director, an additional faculty member and one of our chief residents
We also encourage you to meet some of our current residents at a virtual mixer the night before.
Yes, our program is accredited by the ACGME. Our most recent site survey by the Residency Review Committee (RRC-EM) took place in June 2018. The program has been fully accredited since emergency medicine residency programs were first reviewed and accredited.

That is not necessary. You may do so, however, our ability to reply promptly during application season is challenged by the number of inquiries received.
No. In the interest of fairness and due to HIPAA requirements, we do not plan to offer additional visits or observation time. There is no expectation for applicants to request this.
We do plan to offer two informal second look days in late January/early February; these are led by our residents and will not be used to evaluate applicants. If you are selected for the interview process, you will be notified of those scheduled dates once they are determinedbecome available. In fairness to applicants who may not be able to attend a second look, our program leadership isare not provided a list of second look attendees and our rank list committee will meet before 2nd looks to complete the rank list.
All applications submitted through ERAS are reviewed. UMKC as an institution is only able to sponsor J-1 Visas.
All applications submitted through ERAS are reviewed. As the majority (but not all) of our residency spots are funded through CMS, our ability to take residents with prior training may be limited by funding and is considered on a case-by-case basis. We highly recommend having a letter of support from your current or prior program director if appropriate.
About 10-15% of our graduates stay in academics; either in teaching positions, through fellowships, or both. The remainder enter community practice. Among our graduates are editors of major journals, residency directors, chairpersons, ED directors and medical school deans.
