"Much attention is often paid in pathology education to the volume and rarity of cases learners can hope to be exposed to during their training. While the UMKC AP/CP program can certainly boast of that, with principle strengths in pediatrics and forensics, I think it is often overlooked how important mentorship is to a pathology resident. My experience at UMKC was principally defined by one-on-one time with seasoned attendings that not only allowed me multitudinous opportunities for professional networking but also an incredible window into what my life would look like after I graduated.  That experience and mentorship has been and continues to be pivotal in my career. And for that I am eternally grateful."

"I have had the honor and privilege to undergo my residency training at UMKC. The training program offers a wide diversity of rotations that allow residents to learn from expert faculty and learn key practical skills that they will use in everyday practice. I’ve learned a great deal from all the attendings, supervisors, technicians, senior residents and my colleagues. I’ve made life long friendships. The attendings provide lots of encouragement and support throughout the program. I feel proud to be a UMKC alumni and have cherished the years I spent learning there."

Andrea Ho, M.D.
Associate Medical Director- AlloSource, Associate Director of Medical Grifols Biomat, Colo.

"The UMKC Pathology Residency program provides residents with an extremely well-rounded, culturally diverse, training experience. The program exposes residents to the many facets of pathology including pediatric pathology, blood banking, forensics, molecular pathology, chemistry, and cytopathology. There is often one on one and small group training with the experienced faculty. There are ample opportunities to lead research projects, teach medical students as well as residents in other specialties, and engage in community education. This program fosters leadership development. The training I received has provided me with tools I needed to acquire my first choice fellowship programs and obtain a successful career in transfusion and tissue medicine."

Staff Pathologist, Hematopathology, Yuma Regional Medical Center, Ariz.

Chirag Patel, M.D.

"UMKC definitely prepared me for life after residency. The ability to take ownership of cases early on, combined with the assistance from faculty and lab staff, helped spur many of us into avid learners. I was lucky to have great co-residents which fostered a collaborative residency environment. This collaborative environment, combined with manageable workloads, helps makes this program a diamond in the rough."

Ajemba Ogugua, M.D.

Evanthia Omoscharka, M.D.

Quin Chang, M.D.

"The UMKC Pathology Program provides a wide variety of learning opportunities to adequately prepare residents for their future careers as pathologists, including exposure to some of the rarest pediatric pathology cases during rotations at Children’s Mercy Hospital. For me, the Forensic Pathology rotation with the local Medical Examiner’s Office was invaluable and helped me to choose my future career as a Forensic Pathologist. In addition, I have numerous fond memories of my fellow residents, who I am still in contact today."

Luis Torres-Romero, M.D.
Staff Pathologist, Surgical Pathology/Breast Pathology, KC Pathology, Overland Park, Kan.

Hamid Zia, M.D.
Staff pathologist, Hematopathology, Molecular Pathology, OSF Healthcare and Central Illinois Pathology, Ill.

"I have nothing but fond memories for the time I spent at UMKC pathology, the general sign out format, the affiliation with Children’s Mercy Hospital, the great variety of cases (horses and zebras!) and the autopsy case load have all prepared me for independent sign out and safe practice. But if I have to choose one thing to be the best thing about UMKC, I would say the lifelong friendships I have formed there, with great colleagues, and cherished memories, UMKC pathology was truly a family more than a residency program."

Hana Hamdan, M.D.
Associate Professor, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, Kansas City, Mo.
