Program Overview

This ACGME accredited, four-year combined AP/CP program provides a strong foundation in both clinical and anatomic pathology, preparing resident graduates for academic or community-based practice. The goal of our residency program is to provide an educational environment that produces exceptional healthcare professionals, excellent educators, accomplished laboratory directors and valued members of the patient care team. We are very proud of the long history of graduates from our program that continue to make outstanding contributions to clinical care, teaching and research.

Rotations

Residents are exposed to a diverse learning environment through rotations to different hospitals, including University Health Truman Medical Center, University Health Lakewood Medical Center, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Saint Luke’s Hospital, Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, Community Blood Center,  Midwest Transplant Network and the Kansas City VA Hospital. This constellation of facilities makes us one of the most unique for learning all aspects of pathology. Each site has a unique set of pathology and diverse patient population. Residents follow a core curriculum established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Work Hours and Scheduling

Residents’ duty hours are carefully regulated to ensure compliance with 80-hour ACGME work week requirements.

Evaluations

Residents receive confidential evaluations at the end of each rotation and meet formally with the program director semiannually. Residents have the opportunity to provide anonymous evaluations of faculty and to provide feedback to the program.

Exams

The Pathology Residency expects participation in the yearly in-service exam (RISE) given nationally in March. UMKC covers the cost of this exam. Results are used to gauge individual medical knowledge and to better focus the educational programs of the residency.

Fellowships/Graduating Residents

Graduate outcomes are the most important indicator of success for training programs. Our residency program has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with a 10-year accreditation cycle (the maximum).

UMKC Pathology residents are highly successful in obtaining the fellowship of their choice. Over 80% of our residents get their first choice in the fellowship, even in the most competitive subspecialty fellowships.
