Welcome to the UMKC Med/Peds program! We are thrilled that you're considering joining our vibrant community here in Kansas City. As you explore your options, we are excited to share what makes both our program and our city exceptional—and why we have loved our time here.
A Unique Training Experience
Med/Peds training offers a rare opportunity to care for patients across the entire lifespan—from a newborn with complex medical needs to an adult managing multiple chronic conditions. We chose UMKC because of its unique trifecta of training environments:
- Children's Mercy — our standalone children’s hospital, ranked nationally in all 11 pediatric specialties, where you'll experience everything from foundational pediatric care to complex cases referred from across the region.
- University Health — a dynamic safety-net hospital where academic medicine meets accessibility. Here, you’ll provide high-quality care to underserved populations while learning to advocate for those who need it most.
- Saint Luke's Health System — an academic center with world-renowned expertise in specialties such as Cardiology and Gastroenterology. You will rotate through cutting-edge subspecialty care, including time at the Mid America Heart Institute, known for its innovation and research.
Tailored to Your Aspirations
A core strength of our program is the flexibility to shape your training around your career goals while building a solid foundation in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. With elective opportunities across a wide range of specialties and formal tracks in global health, advocacy, and quality improvement, you’ll have the freedom to design a path that fits your vision. Interested in teaching? You’ll have access to dedicated elective time in medical education and even the opportunity to pursue a Master’s in Health Professions Education (MHPE) during residency.
