Application Information

Our approach to application review is holistic. We take into account all aspects of an individual’s application when considering them for an interview. While we do consider objective measures such as standardized test scores, subject examination performance and rotation evaluations, we also give significant weight to personal, professional and leadership experiences, as well as letters of recommendation. We recognize unique life experiences lead to differing paths of maturity and growth. This provides unique perspectives in the care of our patients. These are attributes we value in candidates. We have many years of experience using a candidate evaluation tool, which has been fine-tuned to inform our holistic review process.

Any applicant who is currently a resident in another residency program or has completed any prior residency training must submit a letter from their former or current program director stating that they are a resident in good standing and acknowledging their understanding that the applicant is applying to our program.

Applications are reviewed by the Residency Recruitment Committee prior to decisions to interview, which is an ongoing process throughout the interview season.

The program can sponsor J1 visas, but in accordance with UMKC School of Medicine policy, we do not have the ability to sponsor H1B visas.

Letters of Recommendation

You may have two personal letters and one letter from a department chair. These letters should inform us on who you are as a student, a future resident and a persjon. Use your discretion to identify the letter writers with the best ability to capture this in writing.

USMLE/COMLEX

Our program, like all combined Med-Peds training programs, requires a rigorous curriculum. We do not have minimum USMLE/COMLEX scores, but we do prefer applicants who score at or above the national mean.

Interviews

To allow our committee time to thoroughly review our many qualified applicants, we anticipate sending initial interview invitations in mid October. We will offer rolling interview invitations throughout the interview season.

Once our interview positions are full, we create a waiting list. You will be contacted by our coordinator if a position becomes available. We make every attempt to notify each applicant regarding the status of their application.

if you have any questions regarding the status of your application, you may contact our residency coordinator, Tani Daumas.

Minimal interruptions to your schedule

We do our best to minimize interruption of your clinical duties through the following methods:

  • Interview offers will be sent in the afternoons or evening to minimize interruption of rounding or work in clinic.
  • Every interview offer will be open for 72 hours for scheduling convenience and to provide you with enough time to produce a thoughtful reply. We do NOT expect you to have your phone out and at the ready in case an interview offer arrives in your inbox during rounds.
  • Interviews will be held in the afternoon to allow for the potential of seeing patients on your rotation if your clinical work allows.
  • We do NOT send more interview offers than we have spots. This means that we will batch offers, not based on any rank, but on the conclusion of our review of an individual file.

As a part of the interview process, applicants will also participate in a social event with our residents and interview with our program faculty and leadership.

Post-Interview

We support the recommendations from the ACGME/NRMP for minimal post-interview communication, and adhere to their suggestion that “programs should discourage routine thank you notes from interviewed applicants and indicate that such communications will not routinely receive a reply.” Please understand that this is NOT a reflection of our interest in you as a candidate, but our sincere interest in protecting you and your time.

That said, we OPENLY encourage you to ask clarifying questions, to seek out the details you need to understand our program better, and find ways to virtually connect with our residents.

Any university wide information session you are offered about any sub-group, Kansas City or organization is 100% private from the program. Feel free to attend, learn more and enjoy the company of our residents, but please know that we consider this your private time and it does not influence your ranking with us.
