Curriculum

Our curriculum is graduated and complementary throughout the four-year residency. Residents transition every three months between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics rotations. Half of each class enters their residency on either the Internal Medicine or the Pediatrics side and then transitions to the complementary side. Electives are dispersed throughout the curriculum to enhance resident quality of life and fellowship opportunities.

Internal Medicine and Pediatric Clinical Rotations

Residents participate in a “4+1 curriculum” consistently. This means our residents rotate at our dedicated MedPeds Clinic every five weeks on average through the course of an academic year.

Below is a table representing an average resident’s schedule throughout their four years and the weeks they spend on each rotation. The remainder of their weeks consist of +1 ambulatory weeks and vacation weeks.

Med-Peds House Staff and Didactics

Every month, the entire residency gathers for house staff and didactics on a Friday afternoon. This is our monthly meeting with the program director and other MedPeds leadership, hosted by our current Med-Peds chief residents. The categorical IM and Pediatric chief residents attend and provide updates within their respective programs. Our chief residents provide Med-Peds specific updates. Following House Staff, we have didactic teaching sessions and simulations taught by select faculty and our chief residents. Our curriculum is driven by resident and leadership input and includes topics, such as board review, future applications for jobs/fellowships, and important Med-Peds topics. Additionally, we love the time with each other — and the free food!

Med-Peds Ambulatory Didactics

Every fifth week, during our +1 Ambulatory week, we have scheduled ambulatory didactics sessions. This is a scheduled morning away from clinical activity where you meet with a small group of your co-residents and a Med-Peds faculty member to review pre-selected topics about adult and pediatric ambulatory medicine. These topic choices are supplemented with articles or podcasts to serve as starting points for discussion. These are held at different locations every week and serve as a great time to sample some brunch and coffee shop locations alongside your education.

Med-Peds Retreat

Every September, the Med-Peds residents are given time away from call and clinical responsibilities to retreat. This provides a time for us to gather our families and grow our sense of community. The residents are given workshops to develop team skills and professional development. This is designed and led by the Med-Peds chief residents.

Categorical Didactics

Both our Internal Medicine and Pediatrics curriculums have monthly didactic sessions led by subspeciality faculty. These are great opportunities to advance your learning and knowledge.

Conferences

In addition to the formal educational half days above, we have the opportunity to attend daily noon conferences hosted by both of our categorical programs (education, advocacy, simulation sessions, journal club and round-tables). Free lunch is often provided. Learn more about our conferences.
