University Health
University Health is a two-hospital, not-for-profit health system located in Kansas City, Missouri. Our downtown location, University Health Truman Medical Center (UHTMC), is the largest provider of outpatient specialty care in Kansas City. It operates the busiest adult emergency department in the city and has one of the top level 1 trauma centers in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Our suburban hospital, University Health Lakewood Medical Center (UHLMC), is located near Lee’s Summit and provides a range of specialty and outpatient services.
UHTMC operates a tertiary perinatal care center serving Kansas City and Jackson County, Missouri, and the surrounding area. Since UHTMC operates a high-risk perinatal center and as a safety net facility, our teams serve a diverse birthing community. The hospital downtown has a tertiary level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) licensed for 19 beds and located on the same floor as its obstetrical beds. A small nursery is also used for the assessment of infants following birth and short-term observation. A transitional room is available for use by parents and newborns just before the infant’s discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit. The NICU of CMH has 60 beds that can be accessed via a bridge between TMC and CMH. Newborns may also be transferred by ambulance.
Children's Mercy Hospital Fetal Health Center
Children’s Mercy is a comprehensive pediatric medical center that provides exceptional care to children in the region. In 2011, the hospital established the Elizabeth J. Ferrell Fetal Health Center to provide specialized care to babies that require immediate attention after delivery.
The Fetal Health Center offers consultations and advanced diagnostics to understand the condition of the fetus best. It also conducts fetal interventions for spina bifida, bladder outlet obstructions, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Post-delivery, babies are transported to the 84-bed level 4 NICU at Children’s Mercy, which cares for approximately 1,100 babies per year. Since its establishment, the FHC has delivered over 1,500 babies and performed over 100 fetal interventions annually, generating over $20M in revenue per year.
The Fetal Health Center is highly multidisciplinary, with maternal fetal medicine physicians working alongside neonatologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, urologists and fetal surgeons. Genetic counselors, social workers, OB coordinating nurses, anesthesiologists, sonographers and radiologists who specialize in prenatal imaging are part of the specialty-trained team that provides family-centered care. The center also operates one of two maternal-fetal transport units in the Kansas City region and is the only one that can transport to any hospital in the area.
